Ok...guess the guy with the 2000 Ford F350 CC SRW that wanted to trade for a 4x4 gas truck isn't interested in my 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4. Never heard back and he relisted his ad (keeps changing his price also).
Anyways, I found this:
- 1997 F-30 crew cab 4x4 truck. 7.3L V8 diesel. 202,000 miles. New fuel pump. Gooseneck ball. Strong truck. The truck is in need of upper and lower ball joints, which I have purchased but have not had time to put in. $5,000
Now, does anyone know how much it would cost to get the ball joints replaced?
Would this be a good deal or is he asking too much?
Also found another truck (not considering this one though) but it was a 2000 F350 that looked OK for its age but the guy said it had a considerable amount of blow-by.
I have heard to "stay away" from that but I was wondering - What does alot of blow-by mean? (engine blown, seals blown, etc.)
I am new to diesels so I am just wanting to learn.
Thanks
Blow by usually means the rings are shot and that is an engine rebuild or a new engine.
The 97 sounds like a good deal. 5000.00 for a 4 door 4x4 is not bad. My friend paid 6500.00 for his and he had to purchase his own ball joints. I think that is common with the 4x4, although I am not positive and mine is only 2WD.
a place around here wanted i think around $600 to do it so i bought a press and the new ball joints and did it my self for about the same price and i got a press out of the deal
My cousin use to work for the Ford dealership (as a mechanic) and then he moved to the Chevy/Toyota dealership. He prefers Chevy is why he moved, also to get employee discounts for trucks and parts.
He usually just charges me about half (and sometimes less) price of hourly labor for the Chevy. So maybe he'd do the same for a Ford.
How many straight hours of labor does this involve?

I had mine done at a local IL. Mieneke for the tune of $710.00 with the axle joints, you might as well do them since your there...my thoughts you could spend anywhere from $550 to $800 for replacement...but you could do it yourself,...Autozone here will rent the press for installing them, save yourself a ton of $$$$ plus get the experience of doing it.....Sounds like a good deal with the truck, around my area it would easliy bring $7000 range providing it looks good
