What are the best shocks to buy for our trucks. I have heard bilstein are good but then again i heard edelbrock makes a really good shock. what are your opinons and which ones do you recommend. I occasionly do drive on gravel roads and for the most parts its daily drive. also its a F150 4x4 extended cab.
My f250 is more of a ranch truck than a daily commuter or off road warrior, so i have low requirements for shocks.
I've not had the truck long and the shocks that were on there were completely shot... zero rebound, I mean ZERO.
Anyway, I'm on a budget and was looking for cheap. I went with the Monroe Gas Matic's ... its almost like driving a new truck. I replaced with steering stabilizer with a Monroe as well.
I think i paid about $25/shock
if you arent scared to spend a couple dollars then buy the billsteins... they WILL last you for the rest of the life of your truck, and they are hands down one of the best shocks on the market right now....that being said, personally i have rough country shocks on my truck.. i got the best ones they had when i did my leveling kit and i think they were bout 35 bucks a peice.... they work just fine and i couldnt be happier... the main reason i went with those is because they had shocks for the dual shock front that i have and it was on the same website as my new leveling springs... but, as i said above, if you want top notch quality go with billstien.
Shocks on my truck were completely shot and worthless when I got it. If you hit a bump in the road while turning a corner the tail end would bounce and swing out from under you. I replaced all 4 with the Gabriel Ultra's (part# G63414 ) and Im very happy. Ride is much better, truck stays planted, rear didn't sag when I loaded it up while moving. Drastic improvement. Some here seem to really dislike the Gabriel's, but I'm happy with 'em. But I was going from pretty much no shock to new shocks, so maybe take it with a grain of salt. Also, Im not hauling stuff everyday, or towing trailers etc...Its a daily driver that I use to move things when necessary.
I just bought a set of the napa gas grande shocks. Cost about 40 per shock with military discount. Seem to do the job fine, big improvement over the old ones!
You can't go wrong with the Monroe gas magnums. The Napa shocks are made by Monroe. Stay away from the
ranchos especially the 5000's. They are a POS.the worst shocks I have ever seen on any vehicle.
The reason the Rancho 5000 sucks is because it is just a dampener and not a gas charged or pressurized shock. That is why the 5000 is also used as a steering stabilizer.
This seems to be a common misconception, for reasons I don't understand.
Non-air-shocks have nothing to do with static ride height, as they do not bear weight. They damp moving weight, but they do not "hold up" any non-moving weight.
Only air shocks (or some internal/externally-sprung shock, like on a motorcycle) would affect the static ride height of your truck, loaded or unloaded.

Shocks damp--springs carry.
You're right, but with the old shocks the rear would sag if you put weight on the bed, and with the new ones it doesn't sag like that. Also, you could bounce the rear of the truck like a basketball, it doesn't do that anymore either. That was the first thing I noticed. I dunno what else to say.

Impossible.
I don't know what else to say either, other than to suggest you reread my original post. It is impossible for a standard (non-air/spring) shock to affect the height of your truck bed, AT REST, loaded or unloaded. Shocks only affect how the bed (ride height) reacts TO DYNAMIC FORCES.
Regular shocks CARRY NO WEIGHT on a motionless vehicle, and thus cannot affect ride height.
Unless...did you get the Autozone "Anti-gravity Upgrade Shocks???"
