Starter question????

I just replaced the starter on my 300 6 because it was dragging. My question is should it take shims? The old starter didn't have them. When I tightened down the new starter it would not turn. So I loosened the bolts a half turn and now it works but drags a little bit also.......

i'm pretty sure they make starter shims for ford. they don't adjust the gap between bendix and flywheel/flex plate just depth that the starter goes into the bellhousing if i am remembering correctly.which sounds like your problem to me

When you drag, do you mean it cranks kind of slow? If thats the case, I would be looking at your cables and battery.

Jeramy is right about the shims, they will only adjust the depth of the starter cone in the bellhousing, not the gap between gears. The small block fords(V8's at least) use 2 different starters, one for an auto transmission and one for a manual transmission. The only difference between them is the length of the cone that shrouds the gear. I had to shim a starter on a 302 once due to the ring gear rubbing the starter. The whole car was a frankensteins monster, so nothing really surprised me on it.
