I am looking for input as to what kind of muffler/exhaust system to install in my truck. It is a 2003 250 SD 5.4L crew cab XLT. I would like it to have a deep throaty sound and some heavy crunch if I were to get on it. I know this is suggestive, but I don't know where to begin. I can look all day online or at the local stores, but it does not give me any indication of sound. I will be doing the work myself. I have access to pipe benders and anything I need. I will be doing all the pipe in schedule 5 stainless. I just need some direction as to what brands sound like I am looking for and the do's and don'ts before I start building. I will be doing it from the catalytic converter back. From the engine to the cat is in perfect health. I will replace that end when it needs it. Any help/direction will be very appreciated. Bill
If your like me, I only do mods, that I feel make my truck have class... Same with the perf mods. I agree, Stainless is the only way to go. expense now, but everything keeps getting more pricey. so go with it now...
My next bit of info, is I think well worth its weight if you will... I go to many big Street Rod, Drag raceing , and 4x4 events... There are many Muffler brands represented at all... ALways, when I go to "Good Guys" shows. all the MFG have misc engines, on stands, with mufflers to listen to. You get a sales men, and tell him what engine you have, and tell him what sound you want... he grabs muffle4rs, and starts the engines, and puts them on, so you can hear them...Just like a shoe store, if you will, and its a class act. It is the upper class crowd that demands perfection..
I have heard Corsa, Magna flow, Flowmaster, and they all have mufflers to fit your bill... My advice, is stay away from the no names, here today gone tommorrow guys...
Thanks mustang I will have to see if a show is close by. I missed the Syracuse, NY national this year. I won't buy cheap. I will go with a good business name. I have all the stainless pipe I want, all diameters. I just happen to be in that business of pipe installation. Hence the screen name Pipefitter. I just lack the knowledge of good sound and the do's and don'ts of installing. I just want it to be right and classy as you say. I will probably prefab most of it and then take my time on install. I can make all the welds in place, as I have access to a portable orbital tube welder. I'm lucky in that respect. Just lack good knowledge of vehicles. Thanks for you direction, Bill
Wow I just watched your video. Nice stang. I'd love to have one. That was sweet.
Flowmaster and Magnaflow are a couple of the popular choices with Flowmaster being less expensive. If your doing just a cat back system you can pick the 1 in 2 out muffler. they both have SS but only in certain models and sizes. The flowmaster 40 series is probably their loudest series. Check them out on line and you can pick the sizes you need. Their are others like Borla but can be pricey. You can find some samples on utube to give you an idea of sound as well.
Your engine will also determine the sound... My understanding is, the V10 has a much faster pop, so it is more shallow. AT least the ones I hear. The big 8s are the best sounding.
Since you have, all the pipe ( lucky you) Go with at least 3inch for duals, and 3 1/2 to 4 for single. or sindle to dual out muffler...
Thank you for the comment on my Mustang... I have more vids, from big wheel stands to being left at the line... ( My no it all son, turned my 2 step down to 3000 rpms) I wanted to beat him. He bought my next round, on a buy in...
GooD Guys is the best for brands, and seeing the actual part perform, but I also hear NSRA is another good one...
if you want a exhaust on the louder side along with agressive then look at the Flowmaster 10 series or Cherrybomb Extreme mufflers. Only thing with these mufflers are they dont come in stainless.
they are only a one chamber muffler. And i'll mention the extreme muffler cause i have it and can provide a comment but all it is a case built around a wing (just a "V" shaped piece of metal, nothing to blow out or anything)
I have Holley Warlocks on my truck and hardly a week goes by that I don't get a compliment on the sound
Edit
If you do a lot of highway driving you might not like the warlocks. They're so loud they get annoying after a while on the highway but they're great for in town driving
