I recently become the proud owner of a 1964 f-100. The previous owner installed a 460 and c6 Trans and left it. I bought this in none running condition. I finally got it running, now that I know the engine is strong and everything seems to work, I am going to send it to the paint shop an get all body work done. The one thing I want to change on this truck before this is the steering system. I have no power steering and was wondering what year trucks I should start looking for to do a complete swap. I am just looking for someone to point me in the right direction. I also am wondering if all I need is the box and the steering wheel or is there more to make this swap. Thank you in advance for any help...
I do have the original axle in this truck everything is stock except the engine and Trans. Is there a later your truck that I could swap parts out of to fit in mine?
You are not stuck with Armstrong. There are a couple of power steering options available for straight axle trucks. One is a power rack & pinion bolt-on setup from No Limit Engineering in California ($700 +/-) and the other would be to install a Dakota-style front cross member from Industrial Chassis in Arizona ($700 +/-). On both you will need to replace your steering column in order to link up with the new steering mechanism. The Dakota style setup is popular, but does require some welding. You can buy the cross member from IC and then get the additional parts to complete the swap from a donor Dodge or your local auto/truck salvage yard. Or, if you have the bucks, you can buy the hub to hub setup for $2,750. With the right parts you can even retain the original 5x5.5 bolt pattern. The third option is installing a Toyota 4X4 steering box, but I'm not at all familiar with that swap. I understand that the Toyota boxes are hard to find, but someone may be repoping them. Again do a search of the site.
Addendum to my previous post (not sure why I can't edit it, guess the time has expired?):
While the Limited Engineering R&P is virtually a bolt-in, a negative (for some folks) is that you will still have the leaf springs. If you go with the Dakota style you will gain a coil spring suspension with a better ride.
