So fortunately this happened just today after taking a 1300 mile road trip in just 23 hours but ran some errands around town today, pulled my truck in it's parking spot, let the clutch out and the pedal came up as high as it can go.
I took a look under the dash and it appears that the rod that goes into the master cylinder came out, it isn't clipped anymore.
Does this mean I need a new master cylinder or can I fix this?
There is a little plastic bushing that goes on the pedal to the rod check that it is very annoying. Its so bad that most of us keep a spare in the glove box...hth let us know..
ahh, nope, wrong item then. I replaced that with a bolt on bearing. What I'm refering to is between the master cylinder and the rod. The rod came out of the master cylinder. Not all the way but enough that now the clutch goes all the way up and if I pull on the pedal the rod will wall out of the master cylinder.
I think you need a master cylinder. I just changed mine , my clutch went to the floor and it stayed in gear I changed the slave cylinder while I was at it. $62.00 for the slave and $53.00 for the master cylinder. The hardest part was getting the little retainer off of the swicth on the master cylinder other than that I had no problem. Make sure to bleed it all good.
Well crap. I was hoping to not have to replace it. Money is tight.
Well thanks, looks like the truck is down until I get some work done and I think while I'm at it I'll fix my passenger side donut.
I'm sure there's some kind of retaining clip in there, but I don't know anything about it. When I put a new master in mine, the rod came separate and I had to push the rod in the master to snap it in place.
If you want to get a better look at it, disconnect the rod from the pedal (or just pull it the rest of the way out of the master) and you can remove the master from the firewall. Pop the hood, take a pair of channel locks and give the master 1/4 turn CCW and it will come out of the firewall. It will probably be easier to look at under the hood than up under the dash.
Well thanks for the info, it gave me an idea. I removed the clutch pedal position switch and pushed the clutch pedal in as fast as possible in hopes it would re-clip and well, it did. So I pushed the clutch pedal in and let go so it would slap when coming back up just to see if it would come loose again and it held.
So I think it was either a fluke or it's telling me that it is close to time to replace.
So it seems to be fine for the time being but I'll keep an eye on it.
For those that would like to replace that stupid plastic bushing as I did, you can purchase a bolt on bearing. It requires taking the clutch pedal out, grinding off the weld that holds the stud on and cutting the eye off the clutch push rod and then install this gizmo. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-...spagenameZWDVW
