PLEASE be careful....

hey guys, i know most of you probably are careful, but watch out for those chain binders! i have always been warned, and always been careful, and was being careful...

but today i was binding a tractor to the trailer after doing some bush hoggin and had a piece of pipe on the handle for leverage. I had both hands on it and it was just about clamped down when it twisted and kicked back at me and the pipe caught me on the chin and had a bolt in the end of it. it hurt. I ended up knocked back about 4-5 feet and out cold on the pavement for a few minutes.

i came around to hear the phone going off that i had a new voicemail and some missed calls. got up, thought i was ok, finished strapping it down and after making sure i was "ok" walked in to city hall to turn in the bill and they informed me blood was all the way down my neck...doctor thought my jaw was broke cause of how it swelled up so tight but 4 stitches and a couple hours later i was back on the job.

Long story short....buy ratchet binders instead of the old school style that suck...its a lot cheaper than an ER visit.

Chain binders are okay, but if your using a pipe to sinch it down, you better get a ratchet strap.

ya those cheap pull down binders suck i rented a mini excavater bout a week ago and the same thing happened to me minus the injurys but for fifteen bucks more it would be worth it not to get your hand smashed or hurt in any way shape or form. anyway lets all try to be careful lots of things to get hurt on in all of our lines of work.

I had a binder do that to me once. I was lucky and it missed me. My dad wouldn't buy the ratchet style so I was more careful after that. I am glad to hear no broken jaw.

After years of treating my body like a demolition derby and getting stitched stapled glued, and taped back together I still use those old style binders from time to time. But I have a bar designed for them it has one end for working the ratchets on trailer straps, and the other end is designed to lock around handle of the binder and give you 3' of leverage and not slide off like a pipe can havent lost one yet using that bar, vs the other style which is just a pipe with, an end on it for the ratchets. They sell em at the truck stop for around $25. Might look into one of those if not.
they look like this http://www.kinedyne.com/flatbed/flat...&Cat=WinchBars

i'd love to make some good ole boy a good deal on all my lever-style. my jaws felt almost like they were glued shut this morning lol. i think i will be making a trip to the truck supply later. guess what i'm going to get....lol

another thing about those old flip style is that if you get just a little slack from hitting a bump or something they can flip open. at least a ratchet style will stay hooked. a little loose is better than no tension

This is what I have also. But I do agree the snap binders can still be dangerous.

If I can make a suggestion, get two different size ratchet binders. I like the small ones but sometimes there is not enough thread to get somethings tight. I have some very large ratchets for 1/2" chain I use for the "springy" loads.

One more suggestion. Get the ones that have the hinged handle. You don't know how many times I have tried to tighten something down and then as it gets tighter it moves in the path of the ratch.

This is what I am talking about:

I just found these, they look nice,RATCHET BINDER (BODY ONLY) - DURABILT DR-1 REMOVABLE HANDLE RATCHET BINDER:

A few years back there was a guy who had run his own excavation and construction business for years. He was in his 40's or 50's at the time. He was chaining a backhoe down on the trailer just like he had done a million times, and the chain snapped and the end flipped around and hit him in the temple. Game over. It makes me nervous every time I do it now!

you are right neal, different sized ones are sometimes key to getting one bound down and getting the correct bite. even in the flip-style i have several different brands and sizes just so i always have what i need.

I hope it knocked some sense into you, but I think that we all know it didnt....LOL

I use the lever styles, just for the speed at which I can bind. I use a small pipe, and am sure to have a MUCH longer than needed chain so that the slack of above mentioned chain can be quickly wound around the binder. This prevents them from coming un done. I agree tha tthe ratchets are much more safe, but I ALWAYS load the handle from the top down, this way, if the binder spins, the worst that happens is that the pipe slides off and hits the ground instaed of me.. LOL
