Texting while driving

Good video for people to see. There is a new law coming to Saskatchewan where talking on a cell phone or texting will be illegal. Hope it's not a repost or maybe everyone has seen it but I didn't see it on here so I thought I would share.
Oh yeah, it's kind of graphic..... but reality.

Yeah, thats pretty graphic all right.

I gotta admit, I do text once in awhile while driving, but I sure try not to. I think the laws of talking on a cell while driving, and texting should be illegal. I mean talking on a bluetooth set even. Anything that your doing that can take your attention off the road, should be illegal.

I know its not the same to pick on the police, but the other day i was driving down 51st, and seen a cop swerving all over the road, not going at the traffic lights when they turned green, slammin his brakes and stopping hard when they turned red, so I caught up beside him (was thinking maybe he was in trouble) and here he was trying to use a laptop while driving!

I'll admit I text. Prolly isn't right but it is was it is. People including me should know better but sadly a law is prolly going to have limited effect.

Now adays most company vehichles have laptops in them its only getting worse

i rarely do, and do it very carefully when i do, but i shouldn't do it at all!!! very graphic clip with a strong message, but it won't help. people are stupid, period. think of drinking and driving. been causing grief long before cell phones were invented, probably has the biggest anti-(don't do it) campaign in the world, yet thousands of people a year are killed by and because of drunk driving. ignorance is no excuse.

the only way this will be solved, is if cell phones are incrypted with some sort of GPS/sattellite tracking that renders them useless if detected doing any more than a 2-5km/h walking speed. i don't think it'd be a hard system to develop, and it definatly would save lives of those to stupid to save themselves.

perhaps i should. it can't be rocket science to develop. i also have another idea to deal with DUI... every vehicle should come equipped with a breathalyser built into the center of the steering wheel. it should be calibrated and set up in a way that the smell of alcohol inside the vehicle will disable the starting system......

i just hate the loss of innocent life due to others stupidity...i've thought of some stuff, but i don't have the slightest idea who to contact to get my ideas tested/proven...

I am in total agreement that texting and cell phone usage while driving is dangerous. A hands free is much better, but still not totally safe by any means. The only thing about disabling... what about the passengers? People on bus, etc

Good idea Sherm, but damn good point Warren.

Maybe what they need is cameras in every vehicle (you cant plate it unless ya get the camera installed) and anyone caught doing anything bad, gets a ticket!

people talking/texting on cell phones are almost as much a distracting as doing it yourself. very rarely do you see someone talking on a cell phone in low tones, and if they're texting, they're often showing people they're with, or talking about the text, generally being a distraction.

no matter how good a driver you are, driving requires 110% of your concentration. when you sneeze, you have an 8 second window where you have no control...picking your nose...thinking of that little hottie in the black dress... its all a distraction. buses typically stop every couple of hours if not sooner, you can stop when ever you want if you're in a passenger vehicle.

sure it'd be a slight inconvenience for some people, but if it saves some lives, what does it matter?

The $500 fines will sure cut the texting and cell phones down.
Sherm The stats now show the leading cause of highway and traffic fatality's is no longer drunk drivers. They have found that cell phones and texting has jumped way ahead of drunks on the road.
I been to one accident where the cause was the driver on the cell ph. I withnessed an accident where a guy rear ended a car stopped at a light. The gut was on the cell ph. Last week I witness an accident where a guy was texting and he t-bone an elderly ladys car. He was flying also for i just finished crossing the street in the crosswalk and there was no car coming til the crash made me jumped. Not expecting it and he was not in sight when I crossed.
I think it is a nessary law. Handfree is no different than having to talk with passengers in the car.

Glenn, I do not think that the fine will be a big enough deterrent to make a dent in the problem!
I am in total agreement that texting and phone conversation w/o a handsfree while driving should be banned, but it will have to be via some disabling system as Sherm mentioned. Anything short of this is just another public 'feel good' half assed attempt!!!
I do feel that using a handsfree device, although not totally safe, isnt much worse than a whole range of other distractions.
