An ODD occurance

Well, i'm 100% baffled here. i was downtown tonight with a friend, and earlier today i had (dont ask how) found out that if i stick the key in JUUUST a little bit awkwardly crooked, it will turn, and then i can start the car, and pull out the key. The Airbag Light stays on and maybe some other lights stay on but i wasnt paying much attention. So anyways, i showed my friend what i had discovered while we were parked. I started it, pulled out the key, and then turned it off without the key. i then put the key in CORRECTLY and tried to start the car. it kept turning over, and turning over. i tried for about a minute, before i started freaking out. the gas pedal felt a little odd (maybe, i was losing my mind for a minute so who knows if it did), i tried gassing it while it was turning over and nothing worked. so i flipped it into neutral instead of park and it started right up... WHAT HAPPENED?! if you have ANY clue what might have caused such an odd thing to happen, please let us know!

BTW its a 1996 explorer. 4.0 xlt

i had a 96 EXP that battery was bad and kids run it untill it would not continue to spark and move. I preplaced the battery and had all functions, but it would not start. Finally after 20-30 tries and several minutes of screwing around i finally go it to startup. I assumed the dead battery had set off some type of theft alarm and that shut off the gas, etc. I would guess screwing with the key did the same type thing. I was also trying to get the kids 95 mustang and 96 EXP to have the same ignition key PATS. I bought new keys as had new cut for each and trying to program to fit both cars. THe EXP caught on and then would not recognize the ORIGINAL key. Same think, turning key on and off, and finally about 30 times, it took off. Some type of theft alarm.
