I like the idea of a turbo charged 460 in my 1996 f250 and i was wandering what the options are for turbochargers, like would a diesel turbo work? or maybe a dual turbo setup using two small car turbos? and what all is needed to use a turbo on a 460 engine
Also is there anyway to not convert to MAF and have a turbo?
You would have to jerry-rig the crap out of that motor to get make it a good turbo setup because nobody makes a "bolt-on" kit. I can't even find anybody that sells 460 exhaust manifolds for turbocharging a 460. I would say it's a 100% DIY fab. job. It would be a cool setup though!
the cheapest way to do this is to run the turbo remote mounted. there is a company who is making kits for trucks, cameros, mustangs, pretty much anything. i think its called scs. any how i have a turbo from a 7.9l deisel that came from some huge ford bucket truck. im using l&l frame exit headers. i ran the whole system outside of the frame and came up behind the cab right where the frame kicks up. all i had to do was run 1 charge pipe through an intercooler mounted in the bed up to the throttle body. run a blow of valve right before the mass air meter with a manual boost controller at about 12psi. and tadah cheap not really ni***red up at all. my 460 came with a remote mount oil cooler set up. i ran the hp line to one side of the turbo the another cooler after the turbo and back to the oil adapter. i have 90mm throttle body from a mustang with matching mass air meter. along with 40lb injectors at 80psi fuel pressure
Wow I'm gonna look up SCS - never heard of 'em! Just out of curiosity, how did the computer handle the 12psi boost? Did you have to get a plug-in? I'm not quite up on electronic engine management.
im in the tuning process and in the process of getting drive lines made. my truck is on 2.5ton rockwells. i mess up on the name of the company. its sts. not scs. sorry
im going to have epic motorsports recalibrate my computer for my injectors and mass air meter. then ill have a diablo sports tuner with me in the truck. the truck was originally a 95 mass air 5.0 truck, so most of the tuning will happen automatically. gotta love the maf efi. heres the ststurbo website. http://www.ststurbo.com/
