shortbed drag style project

i bought a early 99 2wd reg cab psd 6 spd, to turn into a lowered and shortened drag style truck. heres the cuts im going to make, im taking 13" off behind the tire and 5 in front. everyone will say just use a shortbed, but i think this will be cool. its getting 22 on front and some fatter tired 24,s out back. and some centermounted in bed against the rear window short stacks as well as a bunch of performance parts and a short throw shifter. dont worry i also have a lifted ext cab v10. heres some pics of a photoshop of where im cutting and pic of an idea of the finished body should look.
well i got a little done i took out 13" behind the wheel and 5" in front of the wheel. i cut out the wheel arch so i only have one cut in the bed. wheelwells are 5 inches to far back, but im putting larger tubs to fit some big 24,s. i still need to cut 5" from the inner bed out back then i can slide the back of the bed forward. the rear is already slid forward but needs to go 5 more to be done.

it has longer wheelbase than a shortbed, and its not really a drag truck just what i used to describe it.

ummm why would u try to make a heavy SD truck into a drag truck anyways ???

i mean u could mount a rocket to a shopping cart but at the end of teh day its still a shopping cart !!!

good luk on ur project im just not understadnign why is all...

seems like a lighter F150 would have been a better starting point to me...

im not going to really race this truck, its just going to be a truck to take me back and forth to work. and i dont think it will be very heavy, its a 2wd reg cab 6 speed. i do expect a little crap and thats cool. i plan to get some more power out of it, but still want something to get decent milage without having to drive little car.

So you basically want to shorten the bed but leave the stock WB? Don't look too bad too me. Worse case you don't like it just throw a stock long bed back on it. IMO I wouldn't go bigger than 20" wheels, over 20" it starts screaming ricer to me.

i made some progress. i got the rest cut and had a hell of a time getting the spring hangers off. but got and moved the axle forward 5 inches and raised all my hangers and got 4 inches lower. and as you can see the springs set out behind the end of the bed, but the bumper with modified brackets covers the shackles and hangers. so it did end up a 6.5 bed, 13" shorter behind wheel and 5" shorter in front of the wheel. still got to shorten driveshaft and weld bedsides. going to get 3" lower rear springs and 3" lower i beams and 1 lower coils for the front. and still running the stock longbed tank.

hard to get a good pic till i get it out of the garage.

Love the concept, have toyed with the ida myself many times, although I dont care for the wheelbase deal. I think it would looked killer with a standard shortbed on it. Anyhow good work be sure to keep this updated with LOTS of pics.

Ditto on the big bling wheels. If you ARE GOING TO race it they are too heavy.

Weweld did a short bed SD a number of years ago. Shortened the frame and slapped on a shortbed SD box. It was at the national event in Kansas City, KS a few years back. There are probably pictures of it on here somewhere, I just haven't looked. You might do a search on the KS chapter forum. IIRC it was running in the 13's in the quarter. Not bad for a diesel.
