6.7 If it has

It the 6.7 has a wire and bulb for a dipstick I will not be getting one. Do you hear that FORD. I own 3 Superduties 01-7.3, 05-6.0 and a 06 6.0. The 7.3 had a dipstick I could read, the 6.0, Don't. The 01 will need replacing in about 2 years.

I know I can't read the one on the 6.4. What ever happen to the flat dip stick. Had one on a Pete cabover that was a least 5 feet long and worked great.

When you pull the dipstick out it smears oil along the bulb. Both my 6.0 do it and I test drove a 6.4 that did the same thing, I didn't buy one for that reason. If you can't tell how much oil is in the crank case there in no need for THAT dipstick.

I have no trouble reading mine either. Pull it out, wipe it off good, reinsert, then pull out and read. Not too difficult.

If you think its smearing oil all over the dipstick you could be overfilling the crank and just thinking its reading bad. Try putting it back in until the handle hits the top of the tube (about 3/4" above fully seated) and see where it reads. That is a good check to see if its overfull.

That's what I do to actually check it, even then it's hard to tell exactly where the oil is on the bulb. It has a film all over it. No, I don't over fill it. I've got 2-6.0 130K & 100K and 1-7.3 303K, I'll take the old fashioned Dipstick on the 7.3 any day over the 6.0.

Are yours the black bulbs or the gray? The gray ones are a lot easier to read but again I've never had any problems with oil smears on mine

Mine is a light tan color easy to read if you get the textured area cleaned off good. I simple wipe won't do.

I hated the dipstick until I learned two things.

1. 15 quarts is too much oil, and is over the top of the plastic bob.
(the dealer always overfilled it too)
2. Don't try to check the oil for 20 minutes after running.
(it's in the manual)

Once I learned the intricacies, I like the dipstick fine. Mine is still the dark gray colored bob.

You really didn't buy a truck over the dip stick??? I would think that somewhere there should be an aftermarket one, that would work.

14 quarts puts me in the middle of the range, and I change the oil hot and let it drain for at least 20 minutes.

I am aware that it is. In the chart of capacities. Nowhere does it say to just add 15 quarts of oil and be done with it.

Cooling system = 27.5 qts
Engine oil = 15 qts
Manual transmission = 5.8 qts
Automatic transmission = 17.5 qts
Front differential = 5.8 pts

Now I ask you, when you change any of those fluids, would you simply put the specified quantity in without checking the level? Few people would do that, but for some reason with the engine oil they want to just pour in 15 qts and expect it to be perfect. Why is that?

13.5 - 14 qts puts me in the middle to upper range of the hatch marks. 15 qts puts the level up on the tapered top end of the plumb bob, and too high to read. And that's just the way it is.

Becuase its the specified refill capacity and the dipstick is a crude indicator of oil level, its reading is dependendant on adequate drain down time, oil temperature, vehicle sitting on level surface, yada, yada.....
Why trust the dipstick reading over the specified refill capacity?
