Hi there,
I have a 96 Explorer, v6, 4wd, last fall it started knocking/slapping sound that happens all the time and speeds up/slows down with the engine. Everything else sounds great, normal power etc. just this knocking sound--I used to be able to get it to stop by punching the gas but now it's all the time, a few months ago it simply quit starting, the starter would just whir really loud but not engage the flywheel--so replaced the starter thinking maybe the original knocking was the starter not disengaging from the flywheel, but now that I replaced the starter and she'll start, the knocking is still there just the same (I looked at the flywheel and it appears fine). The engine in it has about 130k on and the transmission has about 100k on it (replaced both a few years back) the whole rig has 295k on it. Any ideas on what I could check next?
i drive a 2001 explorer sport trac with the 4.0 sohc 2wd ,,i just recently took the truck to the shop & it had a rattle at start up ,,sometimes when the weather was cold it sounded like a rod knocking ,,but would always go away really fast ,,the shop said it was the timing chain ,,fortunately i bought an extended warranty when i purchased it used in 2007 ,,so the shop recommended a new remannufactered engine & the warranty company complied with a remanufactered engine ,,now its like a brend new truck,,ive always changed the oil religously & ive heard from other people that timing chain issues are a complaint in the particular engine that ford wasnt replacing or living up to the warranty with some people ,,fortunately my warranty company did with me & ive heard that ford has a kit for timing chains in this engine with new tensioners & such that supposedly fixes the timing chain rattle ,,,good luck with your
The timing chain is only an issue within the SOHC motors since yours is a 96 it should have the OHV. Have you tried listening to different locations of the motor like sides or bottom or top end to help you pin point the issue.
Hi all, I have climbed all over that rig lol if your standing in front of it the knocking sounds like it's at the far back of the engine dead center, and if you're laying under the rig while it's running it sounds like it is in the bottom of the engine around where it connects to the transmission housing. Thanks!
The annoying rattling noise you're hearing from the back of your engine is most likely a bad Camshaft Position Synchronizer & Sensor. It's a known problem in older Explorer's when they get up there in mileage. I'm 99.9% sure that's the problem.
If you're not sure what it looks like here's an Ebay link for reference.
