I'd like to keep the box I'm building fairly accurate and am going to try to rivet, if possible the front to the sides. Was this process cold riveting, by peening the head over ? Or do I have to heat them, I've got the 1/4" rivets.
I did some more reading, as I remembered reading once about restoring a box using rivets . Seems the method is "cold peening" having someone applying force against rivet head with a hardwood block, while using the tool to round over the rivet head. Hope to complete this before winter, so I can get box into final paint.
Tom, are you planning on using flush head or round head rivets? You will need to get proper rivet set for your gun and the proper buck bar to set the rivets. This would normally be done cold. The key is to get the correct length rivets for the application. Otherwise you will deform the shank of the rivet if it is too long and you cannot properly buck the rivet if it's too short and it will not hold. Clekos are another required item for holding the panels together and in position while setting the rivets. If you have no experience with rivets, I would recommend that you read up on the process before starting work on your bed. Drilling out a bad rivet is a pain in the back side.
