hi i have a 92 150 xlt v8 302!! i go thru about a qt of oil every 1-2 weeks or so (10w-30) i have 104000 miles and i get 8-12 mpg! i know its not right everyone on here says that my engine is worn out and my rings and pcv valve need to be replaced! well i have 2 questions ! since my engine is "worn out" am i loseing power from my v8?? if so how much do you think 10%, 50% etc?? my other question is how much would it cost to get my rings/seals and pcv valve replaced?? roughly?? and what would they improve? gas mileage/the oil situation ?? anything will help thanks!!
if it's burning so much oil id rebuild the engine. the cost will vary. if you do it your self it's cheaper, but you can but high preformance parts in too which adds to the cost. the change the rings you need to pull the engine. i have never done anything like this but people i know do it all the time with little troble
How many miles on your PCV valve? I usually replace mine every year with the fall checkup for antifreeze, tires, etc etc etc. Look in your owners manual for Ford's mileage points for PCV changes.
A PCV is only a few bucks unless you have a real strange one. A plugged PCV system can cause all kinds of problems, -including increased oil consumption.
Yes, your engine IS losing power. I think the low MPG you're getting is proof enough for you. How can anybody possibly tell you HOW MUCH it's losing without running your truck on a dyno? If your engine bore, crankshaft, and other internal parts don't need machine work, your cost of work will depend on your mechanic. That is if you don't do the work yourself. Different mechanics charge different rates, so any figure anybody could tell you is a guess. If your internals are worn, machining costs can vary too. The parts you need are between 200 and 300 dollars. A properly rebuilt engine is as good if not better then a new engine. In other words, you will have the power and mileage of a new engine, and not go through any oil. If you want to know more, you will have to ask the person who is going to do the work, or somebody you know in your area who has had an engine rebuilt. The people on this message board are good, and have tried to answer your questions.
Some questions though are impossible to answer.
Of course it is loosing power! All engines loose power as they age! But yours is a youngster nowadays with only 104K and hardly worn out. 8-12 mpg is possible depending on state of tune, gearing, tires, loading, driving habits etc. I doubt if you have lost 10% of your power. There is no way to tell for certain.
What brand of oil do you use? How often do you actually change it (be honest)? What filter do you use and how often is it changed? Are you burning oil or leaking it? How many miles is 1-2 weeks? How long has this oil consumption been going on? Did it start after some change? Your oil consumption is unusual but is probably not related to your mileage. Your oil consumption is probably related to some other cause such as the PCV system, an internal oil leak, poor maintenance habits, loss of compression due to gummed up rings, etc.
Have you taken the truck to a professional mechanic to get it evaluated? A first hand look by a professional is better than guessing games. Have you had a compression test performed?
Have you checked your PCV system and replaced the PCV? As I said, it is a cheap and easy thing to do to eliminate a possible problem. Check all parts of the PCV system including filters and hoses for obstructions.
A little patience is prefferable here, all caps is considered yelling. You didn't give a lot of information. You did get lucky and get two responses from two (make it three now) people that have a lot of experience between them and can even call on a lot of other people if necessary, or direct you to others. We will give you as much help as we possibly can in evaluating what your mechanic tells you here. We are not mind readers and we can only work with the information you give us. We can't see or feel your truck in order to do our diagnosis.

You could always change the PCV and check the system yourself first to see if that makes any difference over a 2-3 week period. Then take it to a mechanic.
Tell him that you have had mileage and oil consumption/leak problems and what you have done. When/if you have been burning that much oil you could have fouled the plugs and carboned valves he will need to take care of. Fouled plugs etc can reduce mileage. You may also have a plugged converter. Tell him the answers to the questions I asked. He may have more questions after that.

Have you looked in your repair manual? If not and you don't have one, the first thing to do is go out and buy a Chiltons or Haynes manual for your vehicle. The manual will have a picture of the PCV valve location and instructions on how to service it. On the 302 I believe it is on top of one of the valve covers near the end. Some books just say to shake it and see if it rattles. This is not an adequate test. Turn the valve upside down and compare the at rest depth of the plunger in the body to that of a new valve. If it is more than 1/8" lower replace it.
When you go to the parts store to get a PCV valve have the counter man get the manual for your truck also. If you are working on your own vehicle you almost have to have a manual that covers it. In your case I would recommend a Haynes manual but you may have to go to several parts stores to find one. Find out if there is an intake filter on your vehicle. I don't believe there is but check.
PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. If this valve wears out, or one of the hoses in the PCV system plugs up, the crankcase can become pressurized. This pressurization can blow oil back up past the rings on the intake stroke, and force oil out of the intake breather,seals, or gaskets.

Plugs and wires will help with the gas mileage directly. Indirectly the better combustion will decrease engine wear. Replace the wires one at a time so they do not get moved to a different location in the wire looms. Use the wire looms to hold the wires. Replace them if they are broken.
PCV will help with both.
Try using Valvoline Maxlife motor oil, Purolator filters, and check all of your vacuum lines for cracks and splits. Keep your engine compartment clean. Oil can cause damage when it gets on hoses and belts.
Has your serpentine belt been replaced? It is an extremely easy job to do yourself. If any of your pulleys are squealing a little, rub the little grooves down with a little sandpaper b4 putting the belt back on.
Hope this helps. You still may want to get it in to a good mechanic at an independent shop to check things out. Loose the lead foot also! -hehe
hey torque just wanted to say thanks for all your help!! i did a tun eup on my truck today put a sweet bugdeflector on tomrrow is oil change and filter!!!
ps how would i know if i didnt put a wire in the right order?? casue i think i did that, then started it up and it was shakeing and i switched it back and it stoped so that means i fixed it right? or will i see it in gas mileage or whatever?? thanks!
Sounds like you had a wire on wrong. Probably fixed now.
Get that manual and check everything over!
Use the oil and filter I recommended, no substitutes. If you are dead set on something else tell me what it is.

Did you get that PCV changed and make sure the hoses were clear?
I change my PCV every year, takes only a minute and costs a few bucks.
Make sure you get the oil plug back in straight without cross threading it. It should basically thread in all the way easily with your fingers. Tighten it with a wrench, but you do not need to "gorilla" tighten it, just snug! If the threads on your oil plug are bad get a replacement plug with a magnet built in. Follow the directions for installing the replacement plug. Check the gasket on the pan plug and if it is cracked replace it.
Oil the oil filter gasket b4 you put it back on. Use that drop of oil hanging from the threads of the filter mount and spread it with your finger. Do NOT use a wrench to tighten the filter. Spin the filter on and feel the point at which the gasket just touches the base then tighten 3/4 turn. There are usually reference marks of some sort printed on the can so you can tell when 3/4 turn is.
