I have a lot of extra items running in the truck at various times, power inverter for PC and cooler, chargers for cameras, phones, and video.
I was looking to add a second battery in my 98 F150 and was looking for some pointers.
from what you are saying, I am not seeing a big need... The draw of chargers, is 1.2 millaamps?? How big is your converter??
honestly, the wires in your vehicle are only going to handle so many amps... But if you are going to hook up a second, I would also reccomend an isolator, with a button on the dash to override and connect the 2, If you ever needed it... Kind of like jump starting your self.
I'm with Mustang here, I don't see a lot heavy draw to kill any of your power source components.
I'll bet if anything you could get by with either getting the severe duty alternator and or a yellow top battery.
My truck has seen overhead lightbars, strobe power supplies, radio gear the laptop and mobile modem running all at once and it would kick my rpms down at full load.
Lightbar: 40-50amps (cont.); strobe pwr supplies: 20-30amps; Radios/scanners: 20-30amps (at start-up); convertor for laptop: 20amps (at start-up); Modem: 15amps (start-up)
I'm going to disagree kind of. First, batteries don't make power they just store it. Having more storage means you have more reserve, but you need an alternator capable of charging them. So I would start with an alternator. Your 98 probably has a 130a alt stock and 110 if you bough a reman in the last 5 years. You probably only have 10-13a of head room stock, if you're running more than say 13 amp of accessories you need to step up to the next alternator.
I would also suggest going the big three upgrade. Upgrade your charge and ground wires to atleast 4 gauge.
