I have a 1990 F-350 Supercab Diesel with an aftermarket Turbo that has just started giving me problems starting. It turns over readily, sometimes starts other times it doesn't. I have no idea where to start looking and am hoping that someone here has an idea. The truck has a couple hundred thousand miles on it and has always started and run without issues.. and now that I am about to tow a trailer from Ca. to Ga. it has decided to be a problem child. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Could be bad glow plugs. How long does the wait to start light stay on?
Could be a bad fuel lift pump. Should be a good flow from the Shraeder valve at the fuel filter head while the engine is cranking.
Could be intermittant failure of power to the fuel shut-off solenoid on the injector pump.
There is a great page here for the pre-power stroke diesels. If you go on down the main forum page to the diesel section you will find it. Post your problem there with as much info as possible and you will get tons of help.
Good luck.
I would have thought the FSS was the least likely but easy to check. If you look on top of the injector pump you will see two wiring connectors. The drivers side one is the cold start advance and the one on the pass. side is the FSS (looks like a temp sensor screwed into the pump). With the key switch "on" there should be 12v at the wire and when you pull the wire you should hear a click and again when you replace it.
FSS checked out OK.. started right up after bleeding some fuel from one injector line.. but now I am afraid to set off cross country due to the unknowns.
You may have an air intrusion problem allowing fuel to drain back while the truck is sitting. Might be a good idea to replace the injector fuel return lines and "O" rings (little pipes along the top of the injectors).
