You may need a tool or a brass drift to knock the sleeve loose that secures your fuel pump to the tank.

yeah so no sparks -I used an old piece of copper pipe I flattened out
he will need a lift and or floor jacks-and lots of patience just did this right before the ATNs in pa , not a fun job -but not impossible either
oh and get all the gas out of the tank that you can .

If youre not an idiot you do not need a brass drift or anything. I flat screwdriver and hammer will work fine. Ive changed plenty and ive seen a few other people change them without a problem. I think the only place ive seen it done with a drift is in school..... The ring only needs to be tapped out. Its not like youre banging on it full force.

Then again, its up to you.

Thanks for the replies. I have a length of brass rod, I will use that. I also have a good jack that can lift high enough, and a suitably sized board to put between the jack and the tank. Is there a gasket that I should be changing?

I do not have access to a repair manual right now, and this is m first tank change.

Well, im not calling anyone an idiot. But, what im saying is if youre not careless or wreckless you wont have a problem. You dont need a brass object. I didnt have a brass rod or a drift lying around and they arent cheap.\

And Normmus, there is an O-ring you need to replace. A new sending unit/pump should come with one.

Just checking my good friend. I tend to err on the side of caution and I try not to give reckless pointers especially when highly flamable liqiuds are involved. I'm not saying that you did. But I have done a tank or two myself. With that said, I'm by no means a mechanic and my limited skills barely allow me to maintain my vehicles, that's why I'm very careful.

Have some good reps.

I used a piece of hard wood and a hammer to remove the ring on mine. It worked fine.

Are you changing the pump module too or just the tank? The new tank should come with a new lockdown ring and gasket. If you aren't changing the pump assembly, you should at least change the screen. It was about eight bucks at NAPA.

There are a few good threads on here about pump changes. Some of them become threads on how to remove the bed....

Same here. I've done it a few times and never had any trouble using a small hammer and a flat head screwdriver.

You might want to pick up a new lock ring gasket if yours is in bad shape. I think they're only a few bucks from rockauto.

Make sure the gasket is seated correctly and all the tabs on the lock ring are lined up correctly on the tank. The previous owner of my truck told me that he thought he broke the lock ring because gas poured out whenever he topped off the front tank. When I took it apart he had two lock ring gaskets dangling from the sender unit lol. I put it back together and it hasn't leaked since.
