No I didn't notice the air bag right away, I did however notice a extra bracket mounted over top the leaf spring. Looking closer to see what it was about is when I noticed it had air bags.
ok so i discovered what the problems are about... What a mess. I have only had this truck for a couple weeks as a project truck so it was not me that caused them For some reason the u-joints had no caps on them! Why? I have no clue.. The drive shaft was loose in the pinion yoke so it would sit there and smack around which is what gradually made the pinion split like that in the first place. On top of that the seal that was underneath it all was bent which is what caused the leaking. I replaced the ujoint (with the caps this time of course) which was all banged up, the seal, pinion yoke, pinion nut, and ujoint clamps and it is all nice and snug now. I did notice a little bit of metal shavings in the diff. lube that was leaking out when i was replacing all this which tells me the rear end might need a rebuild in the near future Truck is up and running now but will be a project to make it really nice.
Sounds like somone had that thing apart and didn't put it back together all the way... Did you check all the bolts in the diff while you were in there? Maybe someone swapped it for the gears...
If they were small pieces, it's normal, but if they were big chunks, larger than 1/4 inch, then I'd be concerned..
