Got another dipstick at NAPA - a "universal" that'll do until I can order (online) another one for "looks".
NEW PROBLEM! The new dipstick will not go through to the oil pan. Hubby describes it as "it's catching on something" - and we know it's not the piece of the old dipstick...
He also wonders why/how the old one broke. It appears to have actually been snapped off while inside.
Could the new one be hitting something where the tube meets the block? Something that actually sheared off the old one???
