97 Explorer **NEED HELP BAD**

97 Explorer **NEED HELP BAD**
I have a 1997 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 SOHC engine.
About 2 months ago the engine light came on and the engine started running very rough.
1.Changed the plugs, but no help !
2.Mechanic did diagnostic and showed #6 injector bad, so we replaced it and engine ran a little bit better, but still rough.
3.Did 2nd diagnostic and showed a vacuum leak and was told by a Ford service tech it was most likely the lower intake manifold and they had a history of problems with it.
We changed it out but made absolutely no difference
Ford tech says he does not know of anytime the upper manifold has gone bad !
ANY IDEAS OUT THERE ON WHAT THE PROBLEM IS ???

I don't know the codes, but my mechanic said it was the # 6 injector the first time and the second it just showed a vacuum leak.
No exterior leaks can be found.

Finally found the problem with this 97 XPL !
Somebody put Sugar in the gas tank which caused erroneous diagnostic reads which caused me to spend an unnecessary $500.00 on it.
The Good news is, I have full coverage insurance and they are going to pay for everything minus my 250 deductible.
The bill is up to $2,500 already, so it may be totaled shortly.
To bad cause I just put brand new Firestone tires on it !!
