It has been a long time since I have posted on here, or even done any work on my truck. I have a baby due in less than month and am determined to get the truck in paint before then. I took the cab down to bare metal yesterday and started on patch panels this morning:
I cut out the gas filler neck/cab corner to replace it with a patch panel. I have a mustang gas tanke mounted in the back in between the frame rails. No more need for this.
Good thing I did, i found a ton of bondo covering a very crappy patch job.
I am going to put the patch panel in, and then rebuild the inside part from under the cab. It will allow me to make the patch line up better.
Anyway, I thought I would share my work. It feels good to get some actual work done. And the cab wasn't as bad as I thought, however there are a few cancer spots on the roof that were simply filled with body filler. I am going to have to cut those and and replace with sheet metal.
Glad to hear your making progress, looking good and congradulations to your incoming son or daughter, more helping hands in the future. I haven't even touched my panel all summer and that wasn't the plan. Thanks for the update.
You cab looks great. How did you remove paint. I am almost ready to start mine. I have a media blaster, but have not put it together yet.
Please let me know what air tools and grits you used
I used a few different methods actually. I used some stripper on the dash area, which worked okay. For the rest of the cab I used a DA with different grit depending on what I was doing.
Something that worked well though was a poly abrasive wheel attached to an electric angle grinder. I just moved arounda lot and let it do its thing without getting building up any heat, or putting any pressure on it.

I got the patch cut and tac'd in today. It still needs to move a bit in order for it to fit perfect, but i need an extra set of hands to get that accomplished. I'll have my brother in law stop by tomorrow to help me fit it perfect.
Then I can start the long process of tack welding that thing in.
I boxed it in and built the crossmember. The previous owner had cut out the crossmember under the cab and didnt replace it with anything. Over the years the weight of the cab made the frame bow out a bit.
I straightened it back up and created this crazy looking thing.
