Hi all,
Been lurking for a month now. I havent seen this topic up yet for the Ex so if it has, sorry.
Does anyone have experience with an "in dash" GPS navigation unit. Looking to see where you would mount it and what issues you might have before i go and start with the cutting and trimming.
Been a few nice threads on here for built in gps's...
and while I like Garmin and have had them for years....
that one is not (nor any that I know are ) built in....
to each his own, but I like the fact that my 765T is not built in,
have a bean bag mount that I can move around for best viewing and
from car to car and even remove it easily if I need to...
Some say these are easier to steal and while they ARE, a few simple precautions will limit that exposure....
and IMHO being built in is just a bit of incovenience for someone that's going to steal anyway
I use the Garmin Nuvi 5000, which is similar to the one you are looking at, large over sized screen and all. I use the suction mount in the lower left corner of my windshield and it works great. It also has the composite video input which I use for my hard wired back up camera. We have no complaints about it.
I don't know how much you wanted to spend but Kenwood has stereos with built in gps using the garmin platform. They are about $1000 and have a rebate through the end of the month, kind of expensive but for $300 more you get a nice upgrade on the stereo and it's built in.
I also have a Garmin Nuvi 670 with bluetooth to connect to my cell phone for hands free operation which a few states around me require, I also use the windshield mount on the lower left corner so I can move from truck to truck and never leave it in any vehicle.
I have a garmin street pilot. I took the plastic disc and crammed it in the cup holder on the console and suction to that. Very portable, off windshield, off dash, nothing glued down. Picks up sigs very well.
Garmin is always good, been using them for years and years....but not built in. I'm very happy with my pioneer AVIC D1 or D2 (I forgot which, its 4 years old), my brother has a AVIC-Z1 same good quality very happy with the Pioneer products if Garmin is not an option.
Sorry, he did say in dash, and if hes looking at that garmin unit for 600.00, for the same price he can get a nice pioneer F series with navigation, blue tooth and ipod hookup. As for security, well you got me on that one, but I dont know of two many Ex iowners without an aftermarket alarm system.

No, I was speaking in favor of portable which is cheaper, plenty of features, and more secure because it isn't there (when I'm not there). I can put mine in a friends car, remove it, and don't have to tear up my dash to install it.

All of this is true but the OP asked about an "in dash" gps.
