Other than the "looks cool" feel, I don't know why anybody would buy an in dash unti with the GPS feature. I use 4.3" screen portable GPS units in all my cars and trucks. If they break or stop working, very cheap to replace. If the in dash unit with GPS breaks or stops working, good luck with the repair bills.
And let there be no mistake, the portable GPS units are extremely good, reliable and accurate as long as you go with a brand name such as McGellan, Tom Tom, Garmin or Navigon. Best $150 to $200 you will ever spend.
And in an Excursion, slap that sucker at the top of the massive windshield and it's pretty much right at eye level. Much more pleasing than looking down and to the right with an in dash unit.

I agree and mine is right next to me in the cup holder of the console and I can program it with the touch screen as I drive with a pencil eraser if there is no traffic. I had a job with multiple stops 2 years ago and it saved me lots of time. I could get moving in the right direction and program for the next stop in 1 or 2 minutes, and then if the area looked shaky I would throw it in the console as it switched automatically from 12v to battery power.
