351W distributor interchangeability

Are all 351W distributors (pre roller blocks) physically the same, I ask the question because I am contemplating fitting an aftermarket MSD or Mallory or similar vacuum and cetrifugal advance dist into my 90 F250. 95% of my driving is on LPG where the ECU doesn't control the fuel, also LPG needs a real good spark and can tolerate a bit more advance. If I just take the moduled dist out of the ECU information circuit (or take the module off the distributor and leave it connected to the harness) would the rest of the EFI circuit still work ok for the small time that I use gasoline? Basically does the ECU get a return signal from the distributor or does it need to be plugged in to complete the loop? I have even thought about taking the EFI manifold, ECU etc. off and putting a carb and manifold on, but if I can get the EFI to work for for the small time I use it obviosly it's cheaper.

The computer won't fire the injectors at all if it doesn't get a pulse form the ignition module on the EFI distributor, so the complete EFI system becomes inoperable if you remove the distributor. If you want more timing why not just advance the distributor more when using LPG? It's as simple as losening the clamp bolt and rotating the body. And for a hotter spark install a high output coil.

Thanks Conanski
I was thinking about it in bed last night after I posted the thread(time difference here in Australia) and suspected thats where the injectors would get their trigger from, we do have the static timing set up an extra couple of degrees to help on LPG. Now I will have to solve the initial problem that brought all this about. Most of the time the timing isn't advancing and all the time it won't rev over 3,500 using either fuel, by setting the timing on 32 degrees initial it pulls clean and runs good and gains an extra 500 revs topping out at 4k.

Check for continuity of the spout plug and complete circuit between the TFI and EEC.

The spout plug is ok but I've run out of time to check out the rest of the TFI to EEC circuit before I will have to use the truck to haul a trailer, I know that it does pull fine if I just leave the plug out and up the static timing. What is the max ignition timing that the EEC would put into the engine?

I don't know exactly but it should be somewhere around 32-35deg, but it will be hard to start with that much advance dialed in.
