Ok lets skip the debate of whether or not HPO needs changed along with the regular engine oil. We all know the hard process of removing the plug on the HPOP, syphoning the oil out and refilling.
I would like to introduce an idea that I haven't read on this forum yet and get your thoughts.
A UPS mechanic told me that on their trucks they drain the oil out of the pan, leave the plug out, and start the truck and let it run until it dies (HPOP empties its resevoir, and injectors do not inject). Then change filter, refill with oil, and crank it until it starts.
Supposedly, the engine will die before any damage is done. What do you guys think, worth trying?
im with ranger... if its that important to you to change the hpop oil, it would be better to just pop the top and syphon it out. to many things moving around without proper lubrication.
i use to have a buddy that when he changed his oil he would start his gasser for a few seconds with the drain plug out and filter off just to make sure all the oil was out i thought it was so stupid

No thinking about it, it is a stupid idea. Metal to metal is not a good thing unless you're using a grinder.
I will say this; I went to an antique farm machinery show where there was a both set up selling an engine treatment product. I don't remember the product, but they had a 225 slant-6 sitting there running with the oil pan removed. He said every once in a while he would bolt the pan back on and treat the engine again, then remove the pan for the next show.
i would pull my coil cable on the gasser and crank with plug out and filter on. no start means it wont be rough on motor, just turning over a few times. then same thing to prime before start.
i wouldnt do this on a diesel.
any sorta heat on that slant 6 would kill it. it didnt have to work, so of course it could just idle.
I have seen those commercials in the distant pass and to say the least....they were impressive. The engine RPM would be raised to several thousand without an oil pan and that engine ran like all hell. Always figured it was some type of a gimmick....
I would never try this on any engine of mine.
Think about it.
If there is oil on the parts, where is it going to go if it does not burn off?
As long as there is lubrication and no stress, the parts will remain lubricated till it is burned off.
That's why heat is so bad for motors, makes the oil break down and not work.
Draining the HPO woudln't be a bad thing if the injectors were not oil fired.
If anything on the HPO, suck it out. Don't bother turning it over and running it.
Remember, higher compression on a diesel, not like a gas engine, just the impact of firing on a diesel is a lot of stress.

Do you guys feel that's its necessary to change the HPOP oil? It will mix with the new oil and not be a big deal or am I wrong?
There is no debate once you fill your mind with facts. Dont even believe me. Pull your drivers side rocker cover (takes 10 minutes) and start your motor. See the oil coming out of the injector spouts? This is from the HPO system. Look where it goes, back to the pan. Meanwhile the low pressure oil pump is keeping the HPO refilled with oil from the pan. The so-called diesel 'spert on fool tube who started all this knows less about a Powerstoke diesel than my wife does and all she knows is how to put the key in and start it up.
Nothing but real bad info there my friend, just change your oil like always and enjoy.
