Thumbs down High Pressure Oil Problem- Again....

Thanks to all the frequent posters on FTE- I have solved all my problems until now just by searching the forums!! This is actually my first post....

Here's what's got me stumped- 1997 F350 PSD manual trans, stock except exhaust and EBPV delete, 120K. A week ago it stalled in traffic. Got it restarted after sitting awhile but very weak- low boost, high EGTs. Tried to limp it home and stalled again once it got up to temp. Kicked CEL. Would not restart so I towed home.

Truck would start when cold but begin to stumble and eventually die once it got up to temp. Tach showed movement cranking but put in new CPS anyway. Checked fuel pressure- 50 idle/65@2500. HPOP res is always 1/4" from top. Changed engine oil and filter. Oil level was not high or low before change. No go. Borrowed scanner and got ICP above/below normal code (P1281). Changed ICP sensor. Not it. Removed IPR (timmerman nut was tight). Orings looked fine but disassembled IPR and cleaned. IPR seemed to have accumulated some metallic material inside (very fine like you find on a drain plug). Checked wiring to IPR connector, no problems found. Reinstalled IPR w/new orings and ran great!! My theory is that valve was sticking and once oil got thin she couldn't keep up with demand....

Three days later same thing- CEL on, low power, but did not stall this time. Limped home, scanned codes, ICP pressure again (different code P1211 I think). Checked the usual, fuel, wiring, etc. Removed IPR, appeared generally clean but a trace amount of metallic residue again. Not like first time but definately a trace.

Sending out oil sample tomorrow, thinking I will chase down a complete IPR at IH dealer just to start fresh but I'm thinking I may have a bigger problem here??? HPOP? Maybe the magnetic coil attracts metal dust over time but in 3 days? Hmmm...

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Matt "Lemangeau"

PS Forgot to mention, tapped gauge into RH head HPO bank- pump will produce 2500 psi when hot- but only during KOER self test of of scanner. Otherwise struggles to make 1500 when I stomp on it. 600 psi at idle until it starts to act up- then press drops off and stalls.

Sorry for the long post but I figured lets get what I know out in the open!!!

seems like u are on top of things. good on the oil sample. the metal could come from anywhere in the engine. dont suppose u still have the oil filter from the change so that u could cut it open and see what it looked like? it should stop any metal from getting to the hpop. so maybe something is wrong in the pump itself. just some thoughts. you've pretty much done everything i would except actually replacing the ipr which i see you are planning on doing.

Welcome to the forum. I think you have it pretty much covered. I've done alot of homework on HPOP's and have found through alot of ASE books that the HPOP failure rate is slim to none. But that doesn't mean that ain't your problem. The only other thing that comes to mind is the IDM. Maybe it's heating itself up and freaking out. I don't know, it just came to mind. Other than that, I'd say you got a pretty good handle on whats going on. Please keep us posted.

Thanks, guys!

Skittlejr, good point on the oil filter- I did still have it and cut it apart this morning. No noticable debris- a very slight amount of metallic "paste" on the inside of canister (dirty side) but that is all....

Will update as soon as I find out more!

Check the wiring for the ICP and the pin, if you are losing the ICP signal and your truck is going in to limp mode you may have that issue as well

Guys,

New IPR is installed- truck runs great. Everything checks out on the scanner so now I am just waiting for my oil sample results.

Will update when I learn more (or it stalls again....)
