Hi all,
So I'm really interested in a PHP tuner. I've heard that since PHP is a little milder than DP or the like that it is not necessary to have an aftermarket VB. I asked that question on the PHP forum. http://dygytalworld.ehost-services13...4428#post14428
Just wondering what you guys thought. I don't want to spend $250, but I REALLY don't want to blow up my trans. Just weighing cost vs. benefit.
Thanks,
A VB or transgo enhanses or more or less safeguards your trans.from destroying its self Much better for it than a chip or tuner
You really need a VB or shift kit even stock
You don't have to replace your VB with any tuner. With that said, I did the Transgo and love it. Even with my chip in stock my truck still shifts firm and quick.

Not sure what you're basing your info on, but whether it's PHP, DP-Tuner, or Tony Wildman, custom tunes will make your truck come alive, run like a raped ape, get better fuel mileage, and tow better. I don't think anyone would describe one tuner as milder than the other.
None of the tuners mentioned require you to use an aftermarket valve body. Also, the use of a valve body will not guarantee your tranny won't take a dump.
A modified VB will help the 4R100 shift gears quicker, preventing clutch slip which creates heat, without asking the pump to increase the fluid line pressure, that's all. It's not a magic bullet that keeps a trans from grenading.
I guess necessary was bad wording. I know it is not mandatory, I just want to prolong the life of my trans. I'm afraid of the TransGo, but if I wasn't I would do it.
Or a John Wood VB, these guys are the two premier builders of transmissions. In a nutshell, if your going to get tunes from any of the guys mentioned above, do the VB or shift kit first, this way they can tune the chip for the VB-shift kit. The only VB you can get AFTER you get your tunes is the J.Wood VB and DP Tuner chip, this VB doesn't need to be retune'd. Reason, J. Wood and DP Tuner work together at times to keep their products matched, work together as you will.
Like said above, get the VB done first - that whay Bill (PHP) can customize your tunes for your setup - he's a great programmer, after all he got Jody & Tony started in tunning......

Great question! For milder tunes, it's not necessary to modify the transmission mechanically. If you're planning on running more aggressive tunes or planning for heavier mods, we actually would recommend a VB from BTS or JW.
I'll answer over on our forum, too, for those who don't see this post.
The TransGo is nothing to be afraid of. You only have to drill your own VB under certain circumstances. It's NOT a hard install by any means, but you have to know how to follow directions. They're not GREAT directions, but if you follow them to the letter, you won't screw anything up. You DO have to drill the calibration plate, and we have found that if you drill it close to the largest size recommended for the diesel engine, you'll get the shifts you want. Mine are all at the top of the range and the shifts are firm, crisp, but not neck-breaking or hard slams. I highly suggest you do the VB first, then get your tunes to match. It saves some shipping time and $$$ later (unless you have TW tunes and get free reburns , then you're just out shipping time).
Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to decide between a Transgo or a VB. I've just heard there are a lot of little check ***** and such that are easily lost on the Transgo install. I know someone went over the install guide and made notes, anyone have a link? Also, if I do Transgo, should I do it before the chip, then tell Bill how big I drilled the holes?
