so last weekend i was givin a truck it is a 1985 f150 302 shortbed 4speed. k so the owner told me he parked it in 1997! it had not been started for 12 years! so i put a battery in it and poured gas in the carb and wouldnt you know it it took right off and idled perfect! now it has the two barrel carb on it and i was wondering what kind off milage this truck should get?
You really shouldn't just start up a truck that has been sitting that long. All the oil will have been gone from the cylinder walls long before then. The best procedure is to dump about a 1/2-3/4 of a quart of ATF down the carb, and let it soak. Then take out the plugs and spin it over to get any excess (or old water/gas etc) out.
Also, after you've driven it for a few miles and got it hot, change the oil. You won't believe the **** that'll come out.
the oil was changed right before it was parked and i changed it when i got it home when it started i dint rev it and let it idle for 20 minutes or so before i moved it. the motor was brand new probly had 200 miles on it when it was parked. and i drove it down the road probly 10 miles when i drained it it was fine not even black yet there was absoluly no gas in it the guy let it run out when he parked it. it runs amazing no smoking or nothing
What he (newrider3) is saying is that none of the internal parts had any
lubrication on them at all, and starting it up after it having been parked for 10+
years is probably the worst thing you could have done to it. Changing the oil
then & now is really irrelevant, it's all in the pan sump. There is stuff called
Engine Assembly Lubricant that is used to pre-lube new/rebuilt engines.
ya i didnt really care if it did run thats why i just started it up. the owner parked it cause he broke the cab mount and the door was hitting the fender so im putting a new cab, fenders, hood on it right now and am planning on running it all winter
no thats my other truck and it is completly restored. over $9000 in it i just got another same year thats the one im talking about. and yes the winters up here suck! i have to much money in it to drive it in the snow plus its lifted with big tires to

by ATF do you mean auto tranny oil? I'm getting an 86 that sat for 5 years... how long do you let it sit? If you poor oil down the carb wont that make it real hard to start? Is there supposed to be oil in there?
at a minimum I'd pull the coil wire and crank it till it gets oil pressure. A little better would be to pull the plugs out and cranki it until you get oil pressure.
