I picked up my 1976 F-100 last year. Just before I got the truck the previous owner had done an engine/tranny swap and custom exhaust to the truck. Recently I noticed that the exhaust had burned a very large hole in the speedometer cable dus to the cable just being left to lay on top of the exhaust. I went to replace the cable and when i got to the part of removing the instrument panel the back cover fell apart in my hands. It basically powderized in my fingers. I have searched for the last 2 days on a replacement and have come up empty handed. Does or have anyone else had to deal with this problem. Please help...I can't drive my truck till I can fix it.
Very common problem, they are available as reproductions from Dennis Carpenter, LMC and others. I believe they're around $65.00
Looked in LMC catalog, they're $79.95, two different versions depending on whether you have gauges or idiot lights.
49-6242 with lights
49-6343 with gauges

Reason: update
These are a direct swap, if you remove your printed circut and gauges and swap it to the new cluster back. (The printed circut out of the van will not work, but the rest will)
You need to get one out of a 1981 or newer because 1980 and older was made out of a composite that turned to dust. (what happened to the 1976). 1981 and newer they are made out of plastic.
Bill (Numberdummy) can get you the part numbers, as I've misplaced my notes.
