so i head this pinging sound on a start up after school.. now i drove the truck to school about 13miles and no problems. i looked to make sure there was oil and i notice the dip stick has broken... theres no spirel. lil dotted lines and there was a gagged bottem edge witch gave it off as being broken...
the only real way i can think is to drain the oil and pull the oil pan... if it isnt at the bottem i guess i could fish it out maybe, or maybe take out something else till i found the rest of that dipstick.... or is there a better, or could the pinging sound be anything else
Was the ping there after the engine was at operating temp?
Has anyone been working on the IP timing?
Pinging when the engine is cold and gone when it is warm is an indication your timing is advanced more than stock, but about where you want it.
If someone was working on the IP timing and it is pinging all the time, the timing is to advanced.
As for the dip stick, if you unbolt the top of the dip stick tube you should be able to pull the tube up.
It slides into the side of the block and has an O ring seal.
Got a picture of the dipstick........ If only a small part is missing it could be grindings by now. You could try draining the oil and checking for excess particles with a magnet. The oil pickup is directly above the drain plug. If there is particles then maybe solvent poured into the oil filler may wash out any pieces. Replacement of the oil filter and oil would be required if there are particles.
The dipstick normally goes down into the block where the pipe attaches, I have seen dipsticks miss the hole and bend or just jam up......
i havent gotten the truck to start after that ping sound... liek i said i drove the truck about 13miles to school tuesday morning, and no problems. parked it at 8:50ish came back at 4:10 and put some either in the intake for the ats turbo, glow plug relay isnt working and thats how the po showed me how to cold start it... the truck turned on and died out, then that dame pinging sound came into play when i tried to kick it back over... to scared to try and keep cranking incase its somethign major.
