Here is an example of a Bottom end on a 302, and just how weak they are...

You can do that to any engine if you abuse it.

Sorry they are blurry... The Bottom end was built buy another guy, and said it would handle 750 hp... ( I never understood that mentality) The same guy actually built the whole engine. The car ran 14's. In a fox body... He had vacuum secandary carb, small primary headers, and 2 1/2 inch exhaust... Stock ignition. The car was brought to me, The guy said his car wont run what the builder said it would... I said get me the bottom end specs, so I know what it can handle. I initially wanted to redo the whole engine. He said The bottom end was fine ( as stated earlier) so, I made no promise on his work,( bottom end) but only mine...

He basically gave me a blank check. So I ported polished the heads, The same to the intake. I laugh at the way these things come out of the factory when they are cast. I think they leave them like that, for machinists to make money porting the runners. New long tube headers. 3 1/2 inch exhaust. I worked a new carb over. And re did the whole ignition... New cam, degreed it at 106 advanced... 4:10 rear gears, adjust links -4deg pinion angle. anti roll bar.

After the first drive, the clutch couldnt hold the torque, so I sent the tranny to my buddy to redo it ( it didnt shift smooth) New clutch, aluminum gears under the dash.

I gave the car back, once it was running how I liked it. He went out for a ride, with a mutual friend... The guy that brought him to me in the first place. He did a burn out, then backed up on the rubber, and launched it at 3500 like I said. It pulled the left front wheel off the ground, and then dropped as the wheels spun... I was told , it scared him... I conected the frame at that point, he initially didnt think it needed it.

The next week he took it to the track, running 11:30's. after 3 weeks. He called me. And you see what happened. Actually the engine insides held up, but the block didnt. I was told it was epoxeyd and girdled to, but it wasnt.

The guy wants me to build him a 351 now, as I told him there is a world of difference between block strenghth.

Not!! Stock 5.0 block is good for about 450hp give or take.. and only 6500rpm unless it's got solid lifters.

Based on your description and the pics I wouldn't be surprised if the motor was spun a lot harder than that... surprising it held up as long as it did.

That main bolt in the bottom pic sure looks like a stocker. Not that it would have stopped this from happening but it makes you question the engine builder for sure.

We havent dismantled it, other then takibng off the top end, and decontaminating them... Up close it looks like the inside held together, rod/main caps, but the block itself gaveway and when it happened, The bell housing and tranny input shaft LOL the rin gear played hell in the bell housing. He even needs a new rack-n-pinion lol... The cost of HP...

I had one other one, this guy, built a 347 stroker, in a mustang. Old schoold racer, guy was just retireing. We had just finished his engine,( I was helpinghim at his garage) he was running nitrous, which I am deathly afraid of. He didnt have a purge set up, and wasnt running more fuel, at least in the rear injectors, although he had an oversized pump, and injectors I didnt think it was enough... Well we were at the strip. He said no nitorus till after brake in, well he lied. His valves where melted into his alluminum heads, after the snapped off the shafts... Need less to say, he worked another year, as a result of that mishapp...

Nitrous is nothing to be afraid of , it works very well if its set up right & won't damage the motor if used right ...Lew

I have about $25000 in my engine, it is set up for nitrous, I see to many engines grenade caused by it... I agree, and my biggest thing is, I am not comfortable with my knowledge on it.

I know egt is essential, on tuning.even more so with NOS.

It still scares the hebegebe's out of me just thinkin about it...

It can make a smal fuel delivery issue, into catastrofic failure...
