transfer case problem

transfer case problem
Hey fellow ford guys, I got a question, I have a 95' f150 5 spd, 300 six. The transfer case developed an issue while I was living wayyy up north for the winter (-50c) anyways, the symptoms are:
hubs locked or unlocked - engaging from 2wd high to 4wd high while moving (clutch in/0 throttle input) it makes a raring noise, kinda like a grinding noise, then clicks and ticks as it finally engages, I used to be able to shift no problem while moving, so smooth. now im worried.
I think what started it was a ex-friend decided to jump in the truck, in 4wd low range, with chains on the wheels, pulling a tracker out of some deep snowy ruts, with the E brake on and he chewed for about 250 feet before stopping. I was steaming mad. And ever since then this issue has been around. Mechanically wise everything else is in good shape, My manual doesnt cover the transfer case rebuild and Ive never done it before.
Im good with tools, i have them all and know what im doing, just a bit iffy on tearing it apart blind. THANKS
