I'm considering an idi diesel for my bronco. I've talked to kenpobuck and after reading some the posts on here I'm wondering should the 7.3 be avoided? Also what kind of power and torque are these motors capable of reliably. Are there differences such as some heads better than others or are they pretty much all the same?
Thanks
i would go 6.9 the best year of 6.9 is 87 170 hp 300 na foot pounds of tourge i think there very under rated with a turbo u can get 270 and 500 that put u above a 97 power stroke
they are both good motors the 7.3 is a little more prone to cavitation but as long as you do proper maintnence you wont have an issue.they are both really good motors
there's no such thing as a 6.9 with 7.3 heads and further more the only difference in the heads is the head bolt size is bigger on the 7.3 to help with clamping force due to the little higher compression ratio.

Not true! The glow plug angle was chnged and the injectors were retracted to lower compression. The 7.3 has lower compression than a 6.9.
Actually the pre combustion chambers are larger in the 7.3 heads which is why the compression dropped from 22.5 to 1 to 21.5 to 1.
6.9 = 18.34 cm3
7.3 = 20.42 cm3
Yes the injectors were retracted, but that was for emissions.
Also the glow plug angle changed to move the glow plug tip in the precup chamber.
Head design changes -
6.9 features "centered" glow plugs, while 7.3 are "off-center"
Injection nozzles have been retracted on the 7.3 .060" to facilitate Federal and state emission certs.
So are there any issues I should look for that should be considered deal breakers when buy one of these motors? I might try to find 7.3 turbo. Did they put the E40D behind any of those? The only things I know about these motors is what I've read on this forum lately. Thanks for the input.
