Manual Trans Replacement 89 B2

Does anyone have any good tricks and hints on what will need to be done to get the tranny out and replace it with a good one?

I have the trans, it is the same model, even came from the same year vehicle, so I dont expect any real issues with it going in. Just wondering if someone has done one of these and has any good advice on what to look out for or tips for making it easier.

I am not sure if I need to drop the exhast or not. Any thoughts?

It'd be a lot easier if you could drop the exhaust. You'll also need very long extensions to get to the bolts on the bellhousing.

I was looking at the system and there is a crossmember just behind the exhaust crossover that appears to be rivited in which supports the front suspension. I am thinking that if I can get over that I can do it without the exhasut dropped.

Does that crossmember come out?

it does come out, but that crossmember also supports your radius arms, tons of tension just make sure the vehicle is jacked up with the tires hanging to the lowest point, also make sure to replace the rivets with grade 8 bolts <--- No subs it has to be grade 8.

Updates!

I suspect that you have to drill the rivets out then. What a PITA!

You do not have to remove that cross member or the exhaust system to remove the transmission be it a auto or manual. If the exhaust is in good shape I would not disturb it, if in need of repair or complete replacement then yea I'd just pull it and get it out of the way.

If its a manual fold the carpet back and remove the tunnel cover to remove the shifter first.
As stated it is easier to get the bell housing bolts with a couple of long extensions and a swivel. Pull the trans cross member and then let the tail shaft down to get better access to the bell housing bolts. Just be easy on the exhaust system when letting it drop down a little, don't put to much strain on it. Some of the bell housing bolts you can get through the wheel well easy enough.

Dropping the transfer case first makes it much easier to deal with to especially going back in. Adds off center weight to fight with, very easy to remove/install via half dozen bolts in a few minutes.

Well, thats good to hear. I didnt really want to pull the exhaust or crossmember if I didnt have to. The bolts on the exhaust are really, corroded is the best word I can think of. I dont really know how easy they would be to get off, but if the exhaust is in the way, I guess I will find out.

I usually remove the exhaust and change the O2 sensor while I am at it.

A body lift helps to get at the top bolts, if not, cut the fender shirts so you can access them and the exhaust studs.

Well, the transmission is changed. All went well and the replacement is work great. I was able to get the transmission out without pulling the exhaust, but I did unbolt it from the manifolds and drop it against the crossmember that supports the radius arms.

Now I just need to drive it for a while and see what else crops up.

Well, that is good news. One thing I forgot to mention is I usually fill it from the shifter before I put it back.

I was thinking ahead as well and did fill it from the shifter before putting it back in. Thanks for the tip though.

just swapped out the 5 speed in my cousins b2 today.what fun that was.5 hours all in all can't be tobad made 200 bucks off him for it.

heres my hints/tips(i know a little late)flatten the body seam that runs across the tranny tunnel and you don't have to drop the exhaust.you can reach 4 bellhousing bolts from underneath and the top two by reaching down from the top behind the motor(2.9efiv6)
tranny is MUCH easier to handle without the transfer case.

You can't drop the exhaust. the radius arm/crossmember is in the way , an it does not move. I worked in a ford lincoln mercury dealer 14 yrs. keep the tailshaft jacked up ,when you get all the bolts out of the bellhousing turn it to the left til the top of the trans is at 9to10 o'clock . it should wiggle out. if it a 2 wheel drive should be able to grab an turn . it basicly a M5OD not heavy at all.
