Get fan off water pump?

Well my water pump went bye bye for sure now. So my problem is I don't haev the money to buy or rent those special tools to get the fan off the water pump, so I am wondering if you guys have any suggestions on how to get it off, with no special tools required. Cause I got pump, thermostat, new housing, adn gaskets coming. So yeah help me out cause I don't want to screw around and have to get some special tools. So help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

well i got mad at mine when i rented the "special" tools and they didn't work so i somehow managed to get the water pump off the truck with the fan still attached then i took a saw zall and a grinder to get the fan off so i could get the pulley off that was 2 years ago and i been running the truck without a fan since that no problems yet just can't let it idle in the hot summer for more than 10 mins or so

I have taken off the pump with fan attached myself.
But that won't help in this case i think. If you can get the tool for $30ish, may as well buy it.

taking the radiator out helps to make life easier and also if you got a new water pump you can cut the impler off of the shaft then hold the shaft in vise rember the threads are opposite of normal and loctite the bolts on the pulley to the water pump not a fun job to do twice

Well that tools is nice and all but I kid you not I am broke. I got no job and all my money is spent. I need a way to get it off without that special tool. Any ideas? Did I mention I have no money? None?

Well, putting aside the notion that part of owning a vehicle is _budgeting_ for things like this (IOW, NOT driving it unless you have it in your budget to maintain it), wouldn't the local AutoStoned, O'Reilly's, et al have one of those as a "library" tool? You may have to put down a deposit, or offer a credit card number, but then it's returned/cancelled when you return the tool.

well I had the budget to buy the parts just not the tool. And an adjustable wrench, I have tried, its the thick to get down in there. I guess I will try and see if my dad can get the guy at work to make them up for me.

chain vice grip and a rag to protect and hold the pulley. make a flat wrench from a piece of steel. hacksaw and file aren't as slow as you may think.

i just changed my water pump a week ago and I took 2 of the pulley bolts out and was able to get a 1 7/8 wrench on the clutch nut and just shock it loose with a hammer after quite a few tries. My dad was like "you better give up and do this in the winter when you have more time." I had to use it the next day. It wasnt out completely but was wobbling a little and was just a matter of time. I noticed it cause my idler pulley went out and checked other things. Without taking out the pulley bolts I was not able to get my bigass wrench in there. Good luck

I've heard of using air chisel, cold chisel and hammer, thats all I can think of at the moment. This is with the belt still on I would guess. Have a piece of cardboard or something to protect the radiator while working in there. Your going to love working around that one piece shroud.

And there's prob. 101 ways to improvise this. When I did the break-in service on my tractor, I found myself 100 miles from home with no filter wrench and no strap wrenches for the filters. Bike tire innertube around the filter, vise-gripped together, gripped but stretched too much. Piece of nylon ratchet strap didn't stretch, but didn't grip. Sooo, two-layer "strap wrench" with innertube on the inside, nylon strap on the outside, vise-grip closing the circle, worked like a charm. A long enough piece of the right material (or two) could do the same thing around the WP pulley.

Thats how I did mine a couple of Weeks ago. I used a straight pry bar and a hammer. Shock hit it on the flat side of the nut left of center. It came loose after about 6 sharp hits.
