I just purchased a '99 XLT Expedition (66k, 5.4L, tow package, 17" alloy wheels, very clean for 15.5k) and so far love it. The only thing that bothers me is the antennae bends back on the garage door. Can I replace the antennae with any other antennae that is shorter or will radio reception decline? (The stock radio was replaced with a Pioneer AM/FM/CD radio....it really messed up the "look" of the dash but I do like the CD player).
Also, I bought the Haynes manual, but don't really like it. Most of the pictures are for the 2wd. Is the chilton manual any better or can someone reccommend a better manual?
I recently purchased a '99 Expy with a bent antenna. I replaced it with a short flexible one from O'Reilly's so it wouldn't hit the garage door. I was pleased to find that it didn't hurt my reception at all.
I have the factory antenna on my 1999 and wouldn't even consider changing it. My 4x4 Ex has the 17" wheel option, creating an overall vehicle height close to 6'6". Given that many parking garages in my town have a ceiling height in that vicinity, the antenna serves as an early warning system indicating that I'm on the verge of leaving my roof rack behind. Naturally, this only works if you are crawling forward. Driving through the garage at 50 tends to make the warning moot.
i recently purchased a short flexible antenna on ebay for $10 and the reception is just as good if not better and installation only took minutes, i highly recommend the change.
