I just bought a 2004 F-350 Diesel 6.0. I have been on vacation for the last 3 weeks. The truck drove fine 18 mpg average. The last week of vacation I passed a car on a up hill streach of highway with no problem but my engine light came on. The truck drives fine and the gauges show nothing but normal readings. Anybody have any ideas and can I reset the engine light and see if it comes back on ?
Thanks for any help offered

You need to get the code(s) read. Autozone may loan you a code reader, but it may not read all the Ford codes. If you know someone w/ an autoenginuity - they are great 9w/ the right software). Otherwise, I would advise you take it in. Just an afterthought - are all your fluid levels and temperatures good?
I would have it checked just to be on the safe side. Some DTCs that cause the CEL to show up require several drive cycles to kick that light on, which tells me it could be a re-occuring issue or it could be a severe issue in one drive cycle that causes it to come on.
Autozone code readers will only tell you the generic codes at best and there might be more that would give you more specific clues as to what is going on with the truck(if anything).
When you say everything drives fine are you putting stress on the engine? Sometimes it takes stress to show up something that the computer might sense is wrong, but the driver can't tell.
Do you have a/m gauges or are you going be the factory ones? If you are going by the factory ones, don't. They won't help you til it's much too late if you have a severe issue.
Get the truck up to operating temp(if you have 80-90 degree days, wait about ten min. after the factory gauge gets to it's normal position, that's typical with mine anyway, but mine runs hotter due to the mods as well) and then stress the engine. Lug the engine so it's under load, romp down on the throttle, that kind of stuff. I'm hoping that you have an EGT gauge that would help as well.
Sometimes the truck will drive fine and "you" won't know of issues unless you start to really "use" the truck.
