I recently purchased a 72 f100 4x4. It has a 390 with c6 tranny, so I am told. What tranny can I use to convert to an automatic that would bolt up with little trouble? I am also installing disc brakes and power steering.
Are you planning on retaining the single speed transfer case,or are you going to upgrade to a 2 speed Dana 20 or Np205?
Unlike the F250's which had a separated tranny/trans case, the 4 spd F100's had there single speed Dana 21 mounted directly......if yours is still stock configuration, there may be more to this install than you realize.....
Im not sure if an Auto will bolt up to your single speed transfer case or not?
it will be a lot longer than the 4 spd was,so you will need a longer front driveshaft and a shorter rear one.....you are also going to lose a lot of low speed crawl ability,as both 1st and reverse are about 6.5 to 1,compared to 1st and reverse in an automatic of around 2.5 to 1. If you drive a clutch well, nothings wrong with ride quality in a manual tranny.
If i recall correctly,Ford never offered the Automatic with the single speed tranny,if you ordered an f100 from that era with an auto( i dont think many did?) you got a 2 spd transfer case..... i also believe that they didnt offer any f100/f250 4x4's with automatics until the body style change in 1973.....
