Sound..

Okay well i have had my stereo unit in my truck for awhile now, and i recently have gone back to redo the wiring better and got it all taped up good.

All is fine, but now the RIGHT side of my truck speakers are not as loud as they should. Its like they dont have nearly the bass or the sound as the left side. Yes you can hear them, but its not as it should. It makes me think its the wiring thats wrong because as you drive you can hear them cutting in and out from going to normal sound to the dampened sound.

Any ideas why this is happening? All my connections are good, and there are no wiring loose and touching....

Any help is very grateful!! Thanks

I would start at the stereo itself and follow all the wires to the speakers in question, and make double-sure something isn't loose or touching any metal. Not to disregard how you said everything's good, but with how you said it changes as you go down the road, I'd be almost willing to bet it's a wiring issue of some kind, or a loose connection.

Also you might check the settings on your stereo (balance and such), and make sure the wiring harness for the stereo (if you connected your new stereo to the factory harness) isn't all the way connected..

And this one just popped into my head, but check and make sure that the connectors at the speakers (the small spade connectors that the wires connect to) aren't touching any metal in the door. I had to mount my truck's speakers kinda wompy-jawed in the doors because the original openings were a little too small (and I have 6.5" speakers, go figure), and if you had to get a little crafty to get yours to fit, you might check this too. Can't hurt.

Is this factory radio with factory speakers? Or aftermarket radio with factory speakers? Or factory radio with aftermarket speakers? Or aftermarket everything?

If you still have factory speakers, check how their connection is at the plugs inside the doors - may wanna clean the terminals (spades) a bit while you're at it. Additionally, no matter what setup you have in there right now, I'd highly suggest that you run new wiring to the speakers. I've seen the factory wiring get pinched and rubbed through on the dashboard metal bracing near where the wires come into the cab from the doors. When I run new wires I usually shield them with plastic loom right from the radio all the way across the dash to the doors.

When you run new wires you may encounter a common-ground factory wiring - ignore that setup entirely, most Ford radios that came with that are fully capable of running independent grounds to each speaker, just as long as there is no factory amplifier involved (and your truck ain't got one). I have upgraded several '80s Crown Victoria cars by installing new speakers with the factory radio, I pull the common ground adapter-harness-thing and bypass the amp, then plug the harness directly into the radio so now every speaker has its own ground.

Actually for a while I was running a factory '80s Crown Victoria radio in my truck - the truck radio that's in a reg-cab truck can only run two speakers, while the CV one runs four and you can adjust both left<->right and front<->rear - all I did for that was open up the factory harness plug and add four more pins for the rear speaker wires, then run the new wires to the two speakers bolted to the back of my seat behind the arm rest in the middle. Worked great, then I installed an aftermarket radio cause I got a great deal on it and it sounds even better now. I have no amplifier, nor do I plan to install one - four 6x9" speakers running straight off the radio can bring the sound level to uncomfortable levels just fine on their own Oh yah, you can build up a nice four-speaker system like that using all factory Ford components, all you need is a donor fullsize car with the "Premium Sound" system - just avoid the JBL system, it does indeed sound a bit better than the "Premium Sound", but JBL radios require an amp, and it's way too much of a mess to deal with really.

Now, did get your gears turning or what?
