I have an annoying knocking sound under my truck. I did not hear it until I lifted the front. I have looked, shook, pulled, bounced, kick and tugged on everything I can get to under there and can not find it. I sounds like something hitting the frame under the cab on the passengers side. I thought it may be a shock. I just pulled them off and they did not show any leaking and still had good pressure on them. The 4" exhaust is close in a few spots, but shaking and pulling on it from underneth did not reproduce the noise. I hear more now the when it first started. It happens off and on with no consistancy. I hear it on the smallest of bumps and not on big bumps. I hear it on straitaways and on curves, high speeds and slow. I have checked everything I can think of. I hope you folks can give me some more ideas to check. Thanks
Not that this is the problem but it's worth checking.. I posted this when someone else had a similar question..There is a exhaust heat sheild mounted to the underside of the cab on the passenger side. The factory used what I think are extrememly long bolts for this application and sometimes these bolts will hit or rub on top of the exhaust system. Check the whole length of the heat shield for these bolts as there are several and FYI usually this isn't a problem with a factory exhaust but I have known it to happen.
Some exhaust manufacturers request these bolts be cut shorter to avoid this exact scenario. Your exhaust may not of hit in the beginning but after a little movement and several "heat-up" cycles it could have shifted enough to start now.

Typically, a spot weld on each exhaust connection should be used to prevent movement after the system is installed. That way the factory rubber isolators absorb all the movement.
All of the connections were welded and the mounts seem to be right. The only thing I see with the exhaust is that is close to the transmission brace. I have tried to make it hit by shaking and pulling but can't here the sound.
I read on here that a guy was describing the same noise that you are hearing only under the same conditions, check the front bumper where it meets the fender on the side of the truck. Some trucks have the bumper actually rubbing or almost touching the fender cuasing this noise. From installing plows on these trucks ive learned that you can adjust the gap between the bumper and the fender by loosening the 4 bolts (just a hair) and sliding it down then retightning the bolts. Just something to check.
Thanks, I'll check that as soon as I can. Keep the ideas coming. If I don't figure this and my other problem https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=459041 out soon my wife is going to insist on a new truck. I don't think I want a 6.0 and I know I don't want any thing other than a Ford SD.
i had the same problem when i put on my exhaust. it was very colse to the tranny crossmember but wasnt hitting it. i shook it but couldnt hit the bolt and was hearing and feeling a vibration in the floorboards at a stop and especially when i shut the truck off. i diddnt think you would be able to feel an exhaust rattle but i tried to eliminate that possibility by wedging a piece of heater hose between the bolt and the exhaust pipe and there are no more rattles and hopefully it doesnt melt. i have had it there for about 2 weeks and it hasnt yet
No I didn't replace the track bar. My truck already has a 1 inch bar. I tried to move it around to see if it was loose. How else can I check it and what am I checking for?
