Frank, are the bosses on the side cover (shifter cover) or the body of the tranny? If they are on the shifter cover, you could easily swap them, they're all the same AFAIK.
Yep, the bosses are on the side cover that is bolted on. As I am new to this five six stuff, I am trying to learn as I go. One of the biggest issues that I faced in my search, was the input shaft diameter as well as the inside diameter of the bell housing where is mates to the tranny. One of the trannys the collar on it would not fit into the bell housing. The collar was too big. I don't have a lathe or stuff like that, so it was easier to just keep looking for one that would work without a bunch of monkey motion.
I don't think I am explaining what I want to say real well, maybe it times for another cup of decaff.
The light duty 3 speed overdrive used on the cars and the trucks was the same transmission. The only different OD transmission in the Ford family (in the 50s and very early 60s) was the Mercury.
The 3 speed overdrive transmission I pictured above was out of a 52 Ford car and I bolted it up to a Mustang 289 and put that combo in my 55 F-100. There were no problems in any regard. I did have to adjust the drive shaft length.
I was told that there was a difference in input shafts. I was wondering what the difference was and if there was a way to over come the difference to make it work?
You would have to replace the input shaft, or use the clutch disc from a car, to use a car tranny in a truck, in addition to any driveshaft-end changes. At some point car clutch mechanisms were different than trucks', so you could run into things like Frank described above. Mounts were different too, not sure if they changed the trans part of the mount too?
I wouldn't swear the internal 1st and 2nd ratios were the same between car and truck versions of the trans' either. I know in the '40's there were more different ratios in the same trans case than you could count.
