My truck has a 302 Efi in it however its very tired. I been Thinking about switching to a 351W however my two concerns is that it will drink the gas more than my 302 does know and that it will be a pain in the *** because of the electronics. Can any of you guys share some light on how hard the efi swap? thanks
A 351w EFI engine would be pretty much drop in I would think? I think for the most part all your factory wiring should work too. You would just need to replace your computer with one from a 351 truck.
Just finished the swap. It ended up costing me about 2k. For rebuilding the 351w machine work parts and the like. Also needed a new flywheel and balancer. You need to get the 351 injector wiring harness, the 5.0 one is too narrow to fit on the 5.8l, and you need to figure out the y pipe situation before you complete the swap, this is something I neglected. Now I have a truck that needs to be broken in, but I cant because its running open headers.
the wiring harness will work. I put a 95 5.8 into an 88 bronco and reused my 5.0 harness with no issues.
your best and easiest option would be to locate a low mileage complete 5.8 from a 92-95 F150,bronco,f250,f350 and also grab the ECU unless the vehicle has a different tranny then whats in your truck. and like Bucks said grab the y pipe unless you plan on getting the exhaust redone in which case it wont matter.
mileage difference could actually improve due to the size/weight of your vehicle. when i did my 5.8 swap in my 88 bronco i went from 12city/14hwy (302) to 13city/16hwy 5.8. now in my 94 5.8 bronco i get 12city/14-15hwy but running 35's and 4.88 gears and weight is 6500lbs.
