Introduction and Question

Just got my first modern Ford 2 weeks ago, a 2000 F250 CC LB 4x4 7.3 PowerStroke. Love the truck so far. I have searched forums for week and this seem like the place for me.

My question has to do with starting in sub zero temps. I need the truck to start in sub zero weather. I have a block heater but can't plug in where the truck will be parked overnight. Has anyone thought about hooking the AIH to the glow plug relay so they work together? The reason I thought of this is because I had a Cummins that used a heat plate in the intake and it started even at -27F.

Thanks
Paul

More will chime in, but my first suggestion is switching to Synthetic oil. Many on here, including myself run Syn and will tell you that cold starts with Synthetic are much easier.

Welcome to FTE.

If you change the oil to a 5W40 Syn. like alot of people here do who live in colder climets, test and make sure glow plugs, batteries and silinouds are in working order you should have no problems starting in real cold weather with out pluging it in. More people will chime in with more info. As far as using the AIH with the glow plugs, I am not sure that would really work. I don't think the silinoud could handle the extra juice going through it. Again more people will chime in with more info.

Welcome to FTE. Switching to Syn oil as Matt and Jeremy had suggested is a great place to start. Make sure that your GPR and GP's are working at 100%. I wouldn't tie the AIH into the GPR though you will overload the GP circuit and the relay itself. I really don't know how much help it would be to "fire off" the AIH as a starting aid though. It's main purpose is to reduce smoke on cold startups. You could always wire in a maunual switch to it just to see if it helps. It gets pretty cold here in the winter and I have had no cold start issues. Your glow plugs continue to run for uo to 90 sec (iirc) after the WTS light goes out.

Welcome to FTE,Paul!

All I can say is move south,LOL.

What Matt and Jeremy said will help out with the cold starts.Good Batts are a must,so they can keep up with the glow plugs.I think the AIH is working as soon as the eng is running in our trucks.

-27* thats to F'in cold for me,good luck this winter and stay warm.

That's a good idea. I am an Amsoil dealer so the change to syn is basically a given. The oil was changed just before I bought the truck so I'll wait till it's due. I don't want to throw away good oil.

Another realy could be added to handle the added draw.

For mods the truck already has the 6637, Hi Flow turbo outlet, CCV, 5" straight exhaust, WW on the way.

The only problems I've run into with cold temps was last year when we were at -35. But the problem wasn't starting, it was the bio blend fuel gelling up and it wouldn't go anywhere. Otherwise, I only plug it in if I feel like a wuss and want heat faster the next morning.

Syn is going to make a world of difference ini cold start ups.
Also you can wait longer to start you truck even after the "wait to start" light goes out. Just helps the glow plugs warm everything up even more.

As others have said, definitely run synthetic oil. It will make a world of difference in the cold. You might also want to switch over to the Stancor "GPR" - I have one waiting to go on myself. It flows more juice and should last longer. Guzzle has come up with some great mods & maintenance, and lives in Greeley, CO. It doesn't get as cold there as you'll experiencing, but every little bit helps.

HERE is the site for the Stancor mod.
