351W installed!

Got it installed bolted up and ready to go for the most part. Topped off on fluids and tried to start it. Battery was weak, I guess 2 weeks of running the radio does that. So I jumped it with my friends Subaru. Fired right up, loud as all hell running open headers. Only ran it for about 20 seconds because of a spraying coolant leak, really fine spray like a really heavy mist going all over the front of the engine. It was dark so I was limited to checking the hose clamps on all the coolant hoses. Sure hope its not the water pump or the timing cover gaskets, it got worse when I opened the throttle slightyl. All that is left is 2 vac hoses, topping off the PS pump, hooking up a new throttle cable, bolting on the hood and figuring out the exhaust situation. The 5.0 y pipe angle is about 20* off of the 351w shorty header angle... I figured it would be as simple as widening the Y pipe where it goes under the oil pan, guess not. Any ideas how to make the Y pipe fit? Or any common coolant leak places that end up with water in the fan?

haha hopefully i'll be in the same situation as you are after this weekend, minus the coolant leak of course... i started pulling my 5.0 yesterday, should hopefully have it out today, and drop in the 351w tomorrow... the leak could be coming from the thermostat housing or the tube that screws into the intake manifold... i sandblasted mine, and it revealed a small pin-hole leak at the base of the metal tube that connects to the heater-core hose. that might be your problem... as for the exhaust, i'm running long tube headers on mine, so i think i'm going to be redoing my exhaust all the way to the muffler, gonna go with a dual 2.5" into a 3" y-pipe then into a 3" flowmaster... a question i had, is if I remove the cats, will it thow a check engine light? I noticed there is a pre-cat and a post-cat O2 sensor, so i'm guessing if there's no cat in between those, it will throw a CEL... any way to avoid that? i would really rather not run the cats...

you need a 351w y pipe. the 5.8 is a wider motor then the 5.0.

Xplosive, u must have a 96 then if you have 2 o2 sensors. having the cats in place is a must so if they are old look into replaceing with a hi flow cat. with out those your engine will not run properly.

That statement is true... I will also add that you cannot use 302 headers on a 351 FYI. I reccomend 3 inch exhaust or 3 1/2 if not duals

About to head over to return some parts I didnt need to free up some cash for the rest of the project. Now that I think about it I hosed off my radiator before I installed it last night, I am hoping that the water was being sucked out of the rad and blown about by the fan at start up. I guess I am going to have to ghetto fab the exhaust with a flex coupler or something. Y pipes are hard to come by because CA sucks and all the junk yards cut out the cats, and you have to use CARB approved cats.

Yea, I dont have to smog my truck. So its not really that big of a deal. Until they change the laws and I have too. Then Im screwed. Probably going to go to a muffler shop next pay day and get it set up right.

Ok so the truck starts and runs really good, just ran long enough to break in the cam and drive it 100 yards to get it out of the shop. Open headers is way to loud to tell if the engine is making any funny noises. Not even close to be able to make the 5.0 exhaust manifold bolt up. Angles length and size of the flanges are all different, what a pain. And the only shop that does that kind of work said the wouldnt deal with me unless I managed to get all the piping ready to go and all they had to do was run a bead. Oh the coolant leak was a pin hole in the upper rad hose, easy fix.

Shorty headers? Are they truck headers or car headers?

Widening the 5.0 Y pipe worked perfectly for me with exhaust manifolds BTW.

Here is the problem! Flange on the 5.0 y pipe is about 3/8ths smaller than the 5.8 manifold or headers! They are truck shorties.

Yeah that's not even close is it. Take the Y pipe and manifold to a muffler shop and have them expand the flare until it fits the manifold.

I really wouldnt reccomend using anything smaller then 3 inch pipe anyways, no matter what manifold or header you land up with.

You loose nothing, and gain everything, with 3 inch pipes. Alot of guys say, you loose torque... I had one guy say it to me at a stop light. At the next light, I asked him if he saw any black smoke coming out my exhaust, cuz he was behind me, as soon as it turned green.

I have a total of 80 bucks left to my name. So tomorrow I am going to go to pick and pull and get me some flanges and part of the y pipe off of a 351 rig and make it work until pay day, even if I have to use some flex tubing to make it happen.

No I gotta disagree with you there, it's just as bad to have too big an exhaust as too small. For the amount of air a stock 5.0 or 5.8 can move there's simply no need of anything bigger than 2.5", the motor will produce a broader powerband with the smaller system. And what makes you say "you cannot use 302 headers on a 351"? They will bolt up to the heads just fine the only thing missing is the EGR port on the passenger side.. but that's easy to deal with.
