How many miles is to many on a used powerstroke? Im looking into buying a 94-97 powerstroke for around 7000 or less. Most of the ones I see have anywhere from 150,000 miles to 210,000 miles. Is there still alot of life left in those trucks or what?
Alright sounds good. Im looking to sell my F250/351W and my Dirtbike for one. My Dad works for a Chevrolet Dealership, so hes going to start looking around at the dealer auctions for me.
if im not mistaking i remember navstar rating these engines at an expected service life of 500,000 miles where as your average car has a expected service life of around 200k depending on the make and model. now as we all know some cars when well maintained make it over that 200k and still run strong. some die short when not well taken care of its the same thing with psd's just an much higher expected service life
Just some more input, my motor has about 315K on it and has some bigger injectors etc and it runs great. With new glowplugs, it has always started here in Cheyenne WY even when the temps were below 0, and that's without plugging in the block heater.
Definitely look at the cap test like knottyrope said. I'd also make sure to take a closer look at that intake as well. I purchased a powerstroke with lower miles but it had a K&N filter on it (that was in terrible shape) and the motor ended up giving me too much trouble, so I swapped it out for a 290k mile motor.
Haha I've been pretty dang busy up here in Cheyenne, but life's good! Housing up here is extremely expensive for what it is, so the house we bought needs a LOT of work. It's enjoyable work to do, but still pretty pricey.... plus I feel rushed because one winter hits, I can't do anything outside for about 6 months..... My clearance has finally went through so I'll be doing missile maintenance soon, unless the officer package my LT put in goes though!
I'm getting ready to throw my spare turbo from the Bronco's 7.3 into my Camaro. I finally swapped the 350 into the camaro that I was planning on doing before finding out the first 7.3 I put in the Bronco had issues. Someone I was talking to said harbor freight compression testers commonly seem to have very low compression numbers because the schrader valve is on the gauge instead of the adapter for the spark plug/glow plug (for whatever application). It makes me wonder if that 7.3 I have sitting in the garage might actually still be good, and potentially something else was causing fuel/oil to mix on it other than low compression. It DID pass the cap test and didn't blow much smoke from the exhaust. It also seemed to have a lot of power as well... I still haven't sent out my oil test from that motor, but I have the oil sample ready to be sent.. I should just send it off soon really and find out what it is.
I have a complete motor, wiring harness and IDM for another 7.3 swap. If that motor doesn't require a rebuild, I just need a transmission and PCM and something to swap it in!
