I have a 01 psd with 175k on the clock. It starts up "OK" if it is above 60 but romps like crazy for a few minutes. If I just let her romp it dies but restarts good.If I speed the motor up it smooths out pretty good. The gp system is good and there is no white smoke while this is going on . Any ideas ? Thanks
Could be an IPR issue. Have you tried syn oil? That seems to smooth out that problem for a lot of folks, but then again, you shouldn't be having it below 60 degrees!! Below 40, maybe.
I had a problem similiar to yours with my 01 psd. I replaced my gp relay and switched to Rotella synthetic oil and no more problem!! She has started in 0 degree Montana weather with one key cycle and hasn't done the 'romp-romp-romp' thing at all since the switch almost two years ago. Give synthetic oil a try, it should solve your problem.
Thanks for the Ideas guys , I will dissconnect the icp and start it up and see what happens. I work in alot of DT466 motors and these share the same basic fuel system, with a IH truck, when you unhook a sensor it goes to default mode and the computer takes over and controls it for you. I will see if the Ford will do the same thing.

Yes Ford will default to pre-programmed ICP values when you unplug the sensor. Unplugging it is the easiest test to start with assuming the engine oil is full, of the proper type, and not overdue for a change.
Another vote for synthetic. I swapped out my dino oil for synthetic when I lived in CO and it topped out at 15* for the day. Next day she started like it was springtime. Blew me away. It's a bit more $$$, but after you do it, you'll wonder why you waited.
