I have a 77 f250 super cab with a 351m. The motor was just rebuilt. and yes everything was put back together correctly. Just made a drive from Idaho to Seattle towing a car. In the morning it was just fine, but then as the day progressed it just started overheating. I could only drive 30 miles at 55 before I had to pull over again. I tried taking out the thermostat, no help. Running the heater, little help if any. It was mainly hills and trying to go faster that did it. I got to Seattle, ran a hose through it, it was just fine, so I ran 2 hoses through it, still just fine. I installed a fan shroud. Drove it on the freeway at night temp was at 190. I got off the freeway, it shot up to 220. Motor is completely stock except for the 4 bbl carb. What is next?????????
Perhaps the t-stat was stuck. IN your description the faster you go the hotter thew engine gets. This would lead me to believe that the water is not spending enough time in the radiator to exchange heat.
Is the t-stat back in ? has it been replaced?
How long had the engine run before you went out on the road?
Is your water flowing freely through your radiator? Try some cooling system flush. I do know from experience it is best to have a thermostat to give the water time to cool in the radiator.
Ok so... New t-stat, oem spec and also timming was at 6 BTDC, I whent to 8 BTDC. It is an auto. Still running too hot and also pings at 8 BTDC. I also ran a hose through the lower hose on radiator for a revers flush, then ran a hose through the top, had good flow. So I ran a second hose at the same time through the top, still good. I think, I am going to put on the OEM fan, take of the flex fan and stick a 180 t-stat in. But... what about the pinging. Advance or retard. When the new carb was put on I gutted the vacuum tubes and only whent with PCV, brake booster, advance to the dist. and the one for the tranny. Any thoughts???
Going to a 180 t-stat won't make any difference - that just means that the t-stat will open at 180 degrees - coolant will still get hotter than that. I'd stick with the OEM t-stat and try your idea with the fan. If timing pings at 8deg, maybe set it back to where you had it since it doesn't seem to make any difference in temp either way anyway...
When you retard the timing and the pinging doesnt stop, run a higher octane fuel. If you are running high compression, that will require at least 93 octane. My radiator seemed to have good flow also, I put in a new one and What a difference! You might also want to think about a larger radiator. I installed the three row, or 3 core in my truck.
So I got out the old OEM fan to put it on when I relized that the flex fan was put on backwards. So I put on the oem fan anyway, the right way, and problem solved!!! I guess that teaches me not to put a motor in at 4 in the morning next time. Thanks for the help! Now just to get the timming right.
