The T19 in my '85 Diesel F350 has a close ratio pattern-4.02, 2.41, 1.41, 1:1 Direct
Are the gas engine T19's wide ratio? Internet sources are saying 6.32, 3.09, 1.68, and 1:1 Direct.
Also-Is there a difference between a 2wd and 4wd application?
And another-If i can't find a 4wd close-ratio T19, could I potentially take the internals out of my 2wd Close-Ratio T19 and put them in the 4wd Wide-Ratio T19?
4wd trannies are made for the adapter to bolt to the rear for the transfer case. They can be converted, but it's a little work to pull the rear output shaft out and change it from 2wd to 4wd.
I am not sure of the theory behind the different ratios. One place I looked on the internet shows the t19 in a diesel and the 460 being the same IF, they are both 2wd. They show different t19's for the gas and the diesel if you are looking at 4wd's.
Thank you for the reply Franklin.
I also found the same information, at novak-adapt.com under the "knowledge" menu.
It said the 460 and diesel T19 models received the close-ratio gearing, while the 460 4x4 got a wide-ratio version.
But, we do have to keep in mind that the bellhousing for a gas and a diesel are different. They do not interchange. However, the transmission will interchange because it uses the same bolt pattern to the bellhousing.
There are actually 3 ratio sets. My 6.9 truck has a 5.11:1 first gear, my 460 truck has the 6.32, and the transmission I have out of my buddy's old late 85 build 86 diesel has the 4.02 ratio set. All of the above are 4x4 transmissions. I ran across some Ford documentation not too long ago that specified that they went from the 5.11 to 4.02 ratio set behind the 6.9 in March 84 to improve driveability. This doesn't explain my 86, but, who knows.... LOL
Also, the T19 is found behind 460's and diesels only.
So...what transmission is behind the 300, 302, 351's? T18 or NP435?
Maybe someone swapped an '83 or early '84 model year T19 into your '86?
To sum it up-
Diesel 4x2 and 4x2 are close ratio
460 4x2 are close ratio.
460 4x4 are wide ratio.
