Question Engine & Settings Help!!

I've been working on my truck replacing parts and other things to get it running better. Now I was wondering if anyone knew the Carb and Timing settings for a 300 straight 6? Also as I've been working on it its developed and idling problem. I don't know how to describe what it sounds like but a friend of mind looked at it and he said it was "Dumping Raw Fuel". And if it helps the frist thing he thought of by just hearing it run was that the choke was stuck shut. We checked and it wasn't the problem. So any help as soon as possible would be great. You can message me on yahoo messenger: Slayercr23.

Thanks For Any Help!

sounds like your power valve is shot, making it run rich.a carb rebuild kit would help.unless your is a feed back carb.

the timing on my 85 was 10* bdc.but if it's a feed back you will need unhook the spout connector.the timing should be on the rad support on your truck as well.

How did you go about checking the choke?
Also, if you have the original carb, the 1bbl for the 300 doesn't have a power valve or anything like it. An idling problem would most likely be caused by a vacuum leak.

Do you still have all the multi-colored hard plastic vacuum lines on the engine? If so, you can probably rest assured that they're leaking air everywhere and your best bet is to replace the entire vacuum line setup from scratch with new flexible vacuum line and vacuum T's.

If it's dumping raw fuel, your float setting also may be off or sinking.

I would check for vacuum leaks first. If you don't find any or you find some and fix them and you are still having problems you should probably think about picking up a carb rebuild kit. They are only about $15 and usually come with good directions. Follow them closely and you should be putting the carb back on in about an hour. Just watch when you get it apart there is a weight and 2 check ***** that are very easy to lose and replacements are not easy to find (unfortunately I know that from personal experience).
